double standards for the catholic church?
 

kind of ont he subject of the gay school thing, i find it slightly ironic that the Pope has released a statement saying gay marriages are evil and all catholics and governments should do all in there powers to stop them happening.

this was made as a response to the news that tony blair is favouring allowing same sex marriages to have the same rights as "normal" marriages.

i don't think gay people should be allowed to marry at least not in church anyway for several reasons but i find it kinda patronising to hear it coming from the Catholic church considering A: the amount of gay priests there are and B: the fact that no one else in a position of power would be able to get away with making comments like that.

Isn't God supposed to love everyone, and show no prejudice?

Most of the "rules" from the bible are severely out-dated now anyway...I read about some recently:

Any man and/or woman having sex out of wed-lock should be stoned to death.

Women should not have a higher position than men.

Women should not be teachers.

...and so forth.


People who follow religion do so partially out of fear and ignorance. Imagine if there wasn't a magical book full of old, out-dated rules. We'd have to think for ourselves and create rules that apply to our modern society wouldn't we, and that would be way to difficult.

I suppose it isn't everyones fault, as a lot of people are religious through upbrining; so they know no different than what they are told. Religion is brainwashing.

I was brought up to believe in God and the Bible, but I don't anymore, because as I've grown older, I've started to rationally question things, and personally can't believe religion. Nor can I believe why anyone else follows it.

yeah ive never seen the bible as much cop for pretty much the past 5 years on thebasis that its outdated, could have been written by anyone and is pretty much contradicting in most of it.

anyways i agree with u thomas sometimes its hard for people to question what theyve always believed to be true, ask a Catholic to think about why the stuff they believe is wrong and they'll find it pretty hard to go any further than "it's in the Bible"

im quite religious u know its all a nice idea and stuff and people need belief but i only believe in God as existing as belief in mine (and other peoples) minds therefor God must exist, doesn;t meanGod created the Universe or can move mountains etc... so i believe in God but not in the religious kinda way. wierd to comprehend but i'm happy with it.

Yeah, I know everyone has their own beliefs, and they are entitled to them, but it's my belief that all religious people are quite stupid for being so (no offense to anyone who is religious...you probably think I'm stupid for NOT being religious)

I believe in science...mankind evolved from primates, we weren't simply "plonked" onto earth by a mysterious force from above. We also shouldn't follow some stupid old rules just because they are there.

Imagine if I went back in time, and made some rules myself, and said that people had to follow them, because I was sent by God. They could be stupid rules, but they'd follow them because I said I was sent from "Heaven".

thats still pretty much what the Pope does as far as i'm concerned. he may not say hes from heaven or whatever but he does claim to be Gods messenger on earth or something like that.

this just reminded me of my uncle. he's a born again Christian which is probably for his own good since he was in some organisations that aren't the safest of groups to be in.

so hes a christian now, doesnt drink, smoke, do any of the stuff he used to do and im ok with that but hes really over the top with it u know like sending prayers and has this jaded skew of morals and stuff and it's pretty much like wot i was saying about the gay schools. im ok with it but i dont like it being shoved down my throat.

Imagine how much of an uproar there would be if the church started saying that they didn't want black priests. I don't see why this is any different.

OK, I'm not saying I'm gay (because I'm not), and personally I don't think it is natural (imagine if everyone was gay...no more babies being born)...but, if people wish to be gay, then let them. I wouldn't want people banning me from things because of something as trivial as sexual preference, or anything else.

Being gay isn't a choice, you just are or you aren't. If 2 gays wish to marry then let them. I think if they wish to make that commitment, who are we to say they can't.
I also agree with gays adopting, but that's a different discussion...

I think it might have been proven that there's a certain gene in the DNA of gay people that straight people don't have; which might be the cause of their sexual prefrences. I think i saw something in Biology class with that :? ...or the Discovery Channel :?

True. I read an article about this in Time Magazine. Kind of puts to rest the theory that someone can be made gay!!
