My computer is completely f-ed up!
Okay, I finally got the worm off my brand new computer. It ran okay for a few days, aside from being able to get a really decent lasting internet connection, which may have been my ISP. I don't know. Anyway, the other night I tried to shut the thing off and the "Windows is shutting down" screen stayed up for about 15 minutes, so I finally just cut the power to it.
Since then, whenever I try to turn it on, all I get is this annoying buzzing alarm sound. Absolutely nothing shows up on the monitor. I called Compaq and they told me I had to call the same number back and hit option one six times to get through to a person who could talk about this model. I tried that and only got the same menu from my first call. The first person did tell me that it might be a connection cable, so I checked all those out and they're fine. :? Does anyone have any clue? I didn't have time to stay on the phone with Compaq for another hour and a half on hold last night after my first call to tech support. Thanks! Becky |
Explain everything ans anything you've done to the computer before it broke.
What kind of alarm sound? One continuous beep or several? Any lights on in the front panel? Blinking? Is the power supply fan working? Do the hard disks start (some sort of humming noise)? I need details... Ice |
Sounds like your monitors messed up.
R all the wires in properly?? |
Okay... the computer worked fine Friday night and Saturday night. I was even burning CDs with no problems. I went to my usual websites, but never had much of a connection, so I couldn't really post anything on message boards. I disconnected and reconnected to the internet several times trying to get an active connection. But I disconected from the internet before trying to shut it down.
I selected "turn off computer" and the blue screen that says Windows is shutting down stayed up for a long time. So, I manually cut the power. I have the computer hooked to a surge protector, so when I'm not using it, the no power goes to it. Sunday, when I turned it on, all it does is make a beep/buzzing sound for a few seconds at a time. There's a break. Then it makes the sound again. Nothing at all is showing up on the monitor. The CD drive will open and close with no problem. There's nothing in the A drive. There's a green light on on the front and a green light on at the back. I checked all the connection cables and they were secure. Any ideas?? Thanks for listening! Becky |
Mike: Monitor problems do not cause beeps.
The number of the beeps can sometimes tell you what's wrong. But it depends on the model, so I'm not 100% sure. Sounds like the manual power cut broke something inside the computer, probably the hard disks or the video adapter. Also the keyboard cable might be loose. If the CD drive opens, the problem isn't with power supply, but are all the fans (power supply, CPU cooler etc.) running? Have you tried turning your monitor on before switching the machine on? Does anything show on screen? If it's a new computer with warranty still on I suggest taking it to a Compaq service. I think I read something about on-site - warranty, but I'm not sure. Ice |

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to print this stuff out and retry it again tonight along with something Scott suggested at lunch.
