I'm Just Curious

How do you people bootleg? On the file sharing forum, there are numerour bootlegs, many of which sound half decent. But how, oh how, do you do it? Recording devices are forbidden at concerts, and I can't see how you'd get a recorder (audio or video for that matter) through security.

I'm in no mind to go out and bootleg myself, but I'm just amazed at the number of bootlegs out there, and perplexed at how they come about. Can anyone explain to me the complex art of bootlegging?

microphone into a mini-disk player/recorder is the normal method.

well i prefer soundboard bootlegs to audience bootlegs and never tried to record a show myself. but if you trade for a few years you still get a pretty good collection. i've got about 100 boots till now...

I am a bootlegcollecter and I am happy that some people take the risks and record the shows. I love to collect boots and I don't mind the audience recordings.
I once tried and recorded a show with minidisk and microphone but it made me less enjoying the show so I stoped it again!

That's true. You must be careful that you don't hit the microphone while clapping and/or moving and probably can't sing along since your voice would be louder on the recording than Jon's voice and stuff like this.

i taped 2 shows before (non BJ) and one came out like FANTASTIC!!!!! and one came out very good/good, i was very pleased

i was using a mini disc player/mic but my boss is lending me is DAT recorder for when i go and see Dylan...reason is he wants the first copy i make lol

and there isnt really ANY risk involved in taping shows in europe

reason is the worst that can happen is that they take the recorder off you till the end of the show, then legally they have to give it back... :D

it is different in the States though :(

then the second copy is for yourself and the third one is for me, ok? :D
maybe we should send each other the lists of what bootlegs we've got...

Also, if you'd been to the Hyde Park gig this year, you'd know why people will take the risk - the checking of bags and pockets is none-existant! Fact is, when you're trying to get 100, 000 people into a stadium/arena/park, there simply isn't enough time or staff to check everyone's stuff. The only reason I had my bag searched is because I took a large backpack in (simply to carry food for my group of friends and jackets etc.). The security guard who checked it also seemed over-apologetic when nothing suuspicious was found - why?!?!? Its his job to check belongings. Its no wonder so much good quality photos and audios come from concerts when the security staff are obviously worried about getting it wrong. Not that I'm complaining, afterall, its us that ultimately benefits
