Another thign that annoys me: St Patricks day

Why is it that the UK celebrates the patron saint of a country who hate us more than our own patron Saints?

I'm not the most patriotic of Scots and refer to myself as British 1st and foremost but I still think that it's shocking that st paddys day is a bigger deal than St Andrews day and I'm pretty sure it's the same everywhere else int he UK.

I have no idea why!

Mongoose 03-17-2004 04:44 PM

its Guinness, they have managed to turn into a giant marketing scheme just for them, I bet 90% of people cant even tell you who / what St Patrick is/did

That's amazing celebrating something and not knowing what it all is about

There are many people in the world that don't even know why they celebrate Christmas.

Salaam Aleikum,

St Patrick: Patron saint of Ireland from the 13th century, got rid of all the snakes in Ireland and his birthday was March 17th.

Jim Bon Jovi 03-17-2004 05:30 PM

Got rid of all the snakes?

this day just gets stupider and stupider.

That was the myth. He came from Scotland (well, was driven out of Scotland) and of course the snake is seen as the Devil and that was his first task to get rid of them and he did.
All these old stories are stupid Jim, nowadays people just celebrate St Patrick's day because it's a good excuse to get drunk.

Neurotica80 03-17-2004 05:35 PM

People just use it as an excuse to go out and get wrecked, Irish or not. To be fair though whenever Ive gone out on St Patricks night iv always ahd a great time. :D

Funnilly enough Baileys and Guinness are 2 drinks that I refuse to drink so i can manage without.

I don't remember whisky being on special anywhere when it was St Andrews day
