when have you realised ?

.... the world was in fact bigger than you thought it was ?

Let me explain :

I was talking with a friend yesterday evening about when you're 7-8-9 years old, in fact that's the age you realise the world is not only just your country or town etc .... I find this subject very interesting. More again because we are from all over the world on jt.
In general it's because of an event in the actuality (sad in most of the case unfortunely).
He told me for him it was the construction of the wall in Berlin, and for his son, it was the events in NY.
For my son i guess it's the recent events in Madrid ... he keeps asking lots and lots of questions about this.
Honestly i can't remember what was it for me ....
I'd like to know what was it for you ? what made you realise there are other countries and people in the world ? (hope it's clear  )
Maybe it will help me to remind what it was for me too .....

Aloha !

When listening to Paul McCartneys Tripping The Live Fantastic when I was 8 years old or so. As a kid I always thought it was a registration of the concert my dad went to when I was 5. When my dad explained McCartney performed to people in other countries as well it made me realise there were millions of other people on the world as the crowd always made a lot of noise.

Salaam Aleikum,

I think I was about 6 years old and I didn't understand why people on some tv channels didn't speak dutch!
Well my mom explained it!

can't remember a special event or something. we travelled a lot to many different countries when i was young, so i think i already "knew" when i was about 5 or so... think you also realise it pretty well on a ten hours flight with a seat next to the window... :D

and also it helped that there are 4 different languages spoken in my country. within a 2 hours drive you can reach all 4 parts with the 4 different languages.

I guess growing up in a multicultural family, as in my mum being Irish, my dad Dutch and my sister being from a previous marriage of my mother's, I always kind of knew that the world was bigger so to speak. In addition my mum still had a lot of contact with her first husband, he is Barbadian, so I was "introduced" to another skin colour quite early on too.

From 2 to 5 years old we had American neighbours with which we got along really well, and later we moved to South Africa, so I'd say I realised how big the world was around 5 or 6.

I think it was when I first watched Superman and saw New York City on TV, with all the sky scrapers
