Re: DL: a couple of my bands tunes

Overall, either bad MP3 conversion or too hot recording or both. Crackles, hisses etc all over.

2. Walk Away (p)&(c) J Moore 2002
Good singer but bad articulation. You can barely make out the words. Nice sound on the guitar, but the drums sound like boxes. And what's with the out-of-sync-riff in the beginning? Sounds odd. The bass controls the sound a bit too much. The song itself is basic post-grunge-stuff. Played pretty good but not my stuff.

1. Waiting In Vein (p)&(c) G Moore 2001
Again nice guitar sounds, but the drummer overdoes the cymbal part in the beginning. Just a few "clings" would do it. This one has a better overall sound, but it's still too hot. The vocals get distorted. As a song little bit better than the other one, but not enough choruses for me.

I anticipated for a lot better sound after all your comments on others songs. It's an amateur mistake to drive the sound over the limit, and both of these get distorted. Plus, the band isn't as thight as it could be.

comments appreciated kev and both are way too hot but thats down to the engineer/ producer and the mixing is pretty dodgy cos he couldn't change any levels after it had been recorded.

interesting about the guitar and drums. i love the drums on walk away but absolutely despise the guitars. the kit was like a 2 grand premier fully miced whereas the guitar were run through crap peavey solid state things with 10" speakers. different strokes for different folks i suppose. the biggest thing that annoyed me about it was that there was supposed to be a build up of feedback from me at the intro just before everythign kicks in ala some might say but the fanny producer didn't want me doing it cause he didn't think he would be able to control it. funnilly enough he didnt do too great a job with the whole track anyways.

the syncopated drum bit at the start, i didn't like either cause it meant he was always coming into the proper beat a little out but he was adamant that it sounded good and everyone bar me decided to agree though i'll have to be showing them this comment when we do the proper recording of it :D

and true it could've and should've been alot tighter but we were more bothered about getting a demo fast etc...

going to get my bro to sort some stuff we done totally by ourselves thats saved on our mixer up soon hopefully.

I've always had a thing for a "big sound from a small amp" thing. I've used it myself. And I know of aband who recorded a commercial track using a mini-Fender inside a miked shoebox. It's not what you use, it's how it sounds. :)

I know but when the studio refuse to even let you use your own amps. i mean we don't play with crap peaveys so why have them on the tracks but as i said in the music forum, thats what happens when you let the drummer book the studio. he ends up with a great kit and everyone elses gear is worth less than a tom.

waiting in vain was actually done in a different studiop and laid down track by track hence why its good much better production on it. i prefer doing that much more to laying down live backline then workign the vocals over it but MORE CHORUSES??? the thign goes on for about a decade and you want more? suppose my bro will be glad for he is the master of the dragged out ballad :D

Just wondering where you're getting post grunge from walk away as well cause to me it's just a pretty straight forward soft rock tune.

I'll rephrase: bigger choruses. I like stuff like Livin' On A Prayer.

Sounds like Nickelback/Creed/3 Doors Down... Add a big chorus and it's closer to Nickelback which is good. But I'm not a fan of that kind of music anyway, I'm into big choruses and sing-along melodies. :)

I wouldn't mind if it fit the song and was played in sync with the rest of the band, but now it sounds like a bad drummer.

That's the way it goes. But next time, don't let the producer crack it up to red.
