Dr. Sambora...

Here's a little snippet of an article I read today in the Bergen Record (our newspaper here in North Jersey):

So what's the best way to celebrate academic achievement at graduation? How about giving a dropout rock star an honorary degree?

That's the route Kean University took when it presented Richie Sambora, guitarist for Bon Jovi, with a doctorate of humane letters at it's graduation this month. Sambora, 44, was a lackluster student at the school in Union for three semesters before dropping out.

Kean officials said they chose Sambora for his philanthropic work - helping 9/11 victims - as well as his rock stardom. His commencement address focused on the need for perseverance but he also took time to revel in his pop culture celebrity. "Hey, did I happen to mention that I'm married to Heather Locklear?" Sambora asked the graduates.

Reading this makes me mad! Okay so Richie didn't graduate form college- big deal. Not everyone in the world goes to college. Richie was invited to be there and from the speech I read it sounded like he was a great speaker. Richie was there telling people that they can accomplish anything if they want it bad enough- he is living proof that great things can happen to you if you work hard. He was inspiring these college graduates to do just that.

Okay so he mentioned he is married to Heather. So what he is- he was saying that to show again he was just a kid from Jersey and look who he ended up marrying a beautiful movie star. That fit right in with the theme of the speech that he has had a lot of great things happen to him and that great things will be happening to the graduates too. Just wondering if this news reporter is a bit jealous?

And for the record when i graduated from college we had some local council person be our guest speaker who i am sure had a fancy degree form some fancy college and ya know what- believe me i would have much rather had Richie even if he is a college dropout- that certaintly doesn't matter to me. He is a great humanitarian and I am sure his speech was more enetrtaining than the guy i had at mine. Damn, i knew i should have gone to school in New Jersey!

Hey, don't take this too seriously! The article was about how the latest trend is to give honorary degrees to celebrities. They mentioned other people too - Yogi Berra, Bruce Willis, Alec Baldwin, Bill Cosby. I only mentioned the part about Richie.

This is also from the article:

Dan Higgins, a spokesman for Kean, said the university received no complaints about it's choice [for a guest speaker]. "He was very inspirational in his speech," said Higgins. "I think it was a very good message for our students."

And if I was married to someone who looked as good as Heather, I'd announce it to everyone too!
