the Draft

i don't know if this has been posted here before, but a friend sent me this link and i'm wondering how true it is since i hadn't heard of it until now. shouldn't something this important be all over the news and such? here's the link- http://www.congress.org/congressorg/...ua_congressorg

Looks like it's being discussed either in Congress or Senate, but the mentionned bills are not enrolled yet, it seems.

The present administration won't discuss this before elections. It is an unpopular war in many parts of this country and they might lose votes :(

Those bills deserve to die horrendous deaths on the floors of their respective houses, just like their authors and supporters.

If you go on the congress web site and read some of the supporters of those bills, it seems they are rather opposed to war and the way the one in Iraq has been carried out.
Their main point is that with a draft that would ensure that people from all social classes would be drafted, leaders would think twice before starting a war and would go for the diplomatic issue as far as possible.

What do you think?

I think that starting a draft for any reason should be grounds for a non-commutable sentence of public hanging. Whether they do it to prevent war or protest war, whatever the heck is their reason, there is no excuse for sentencing young men and women to fight and die against their will. I don't care if it never goes through, that someone would seriously consider enslaving a portion of this country is at the very least grounds for exile or life imprisonment, much less execution. We tossed out slavery more than 100 years ago, to propose it again, for any reason at all is morally despicable.

Like one of my favorite authors, L Neil Smith, says:

a draft would give plenty of young people the kick up the arse they need these days.

I for one would welcome it back over here.

So why haven't you joined the military yet? You understand that the draft is forcing someone to join the military against their will, right? You're not mistaking it for somethinge else?

I've not joined it because i've got better prospects doing other things than taking a year or 2 out to join the army but I know several people who have signed up and have grown as people by an incredible amount.

Yes I know what the draft is and wouldn't hesitate to go if they brought it in. I'd probably sign up to go as quickly as possible actually.

nothing wrong with doing a bit of service for your country.

Except you know, when they put a gun to your head (figuratively) and tell you to fight or they'll put you in jail. That's not freedom, and it sure as heck isn't worth fighting for.
