getting rid of pop ups?
I'm currently having alot of trouble with my PC, much of it appearing to be due to spy ware and a trojan horse but alot of it seems to be down to tonnes of pop ups too.
anyoen know where I can get any good pop up protectors? |
I'm having similar problems, and I have a popup blocker but there is something on my PC that I can't find that is causing popups, but it loads them from my PC so they don't show as popups and thus my blocker doesnt work on them.
I've used AVG, AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyhunter to try to find whatever it is but nothing works. I'm going to re-format soon I think, but I can't find the discs, lol |
Use Opera as browser, it has built-in popupkiller.
Another choise for those IE (yuck!) lovers might be Avant browser. Avant use IE but it is whole new user interface. hell of a lot better than plain IE. Avant also has popup block in it, I think Im sure u already know how to clean them spyware craps, in case u dont. "ad-aware" or "spy bot search and destroy" will do the trick. |
befoer u start formatting, look around in windows a bit (assuming that u have XP)....
run MSCONFIG, look from "startup" tab, whatever causes them popups might be lurking there. If u locate it, preventing it starting is as easy as removing mark from its line. IT can also be something that is running as service, but I think that's bit more difficult to locate. |

in that case, it must be something new. I'd suggest for u to wait few days & keep on updating your pop/spy/antivir progs, there's a good chance that some of those progs can kill it soon
edit: it might also be something that came with a prog u installed, so, installed anything "free" lately? |

next time it pops up, dont close it and open task manager & look from processes. then close it and see if something disappears from processes. if u spot it u can try to find the thing that runs 'em. Sorry but that's about all I know that can be useful.

Stone's on the right track. I would suggest using Mozilla Firefox or if you really, really have to use IE (I don't understand why anyone would want to) install the Google tool bar to it. It kills pop-ups and it's easy to install. http://toolbar.google.com/
