Misery likes company is a well known saying, it means that people who are miserable like to be with other people who are miserable. I think :?

Its such a long way down: He's looking out the window, and the ground is a long way down

Play for keeps: Like, playing the best he can because every time he plays may be his last. Tis a cowboy thing :D

I thought "Misery Likes Company" meant something like misery is always looking for people to "torment". Something along the lines that misery by itself doesn't exist, until it finds someone. Am I making any sense?

And "play for keeps" I understood like play so that you don't forget the technique or something like that.

But then again you're a native speaker and I'm not

I thought "misery likes company" means that all bad things happen at once.

Yeah, I think the same. In real life it's like "when somethings going wrong, the next disaster is coming soon"

To me, "Misery likes company" means that misery is always hanging around, waiting till something gets to you

To me, misery likes company means that people that are miserable like to be around other people that are also miserable.

"Staring out the window,"

He's trapped in the cage of his apartment staring at the world outside. Think 'Kafka" heh heh

"it's such a long way down."

Yes, it is a long way down to the pavement, but more importantly he is reflecting the the long journey he has taken from innocence to one who is so miserable (like in Lonely at the Top)

"I'd like to jump,"

there are a few meanings here, but the two most important are probably:

1) He knows he needs to do something to change his life and be less miserable and bored--to take a plunge and be 'reborn' so to speak. And

2)also, he is miserable and bored and ponders killing himself.

"but I'm afraid to hit the ground."

He is weak. Too weak too make a 'jump' with 'such a long way down.'
He is also afraid of screwing up--of taking the 'jump' for change and screwing it all up because, as you know, he is very insecure.

Misery likes company

Yes a common phrase meaning that those in misery like to be around other miserable people or like to try and make other miserable and that one bad thing follows another in this world (like he says, outside the world is burning, it's so hard to believe)...it all ties together

I like the way that sounds

Just an ironic musing on his own loneliness. Picture yourself saying this
line in this character's position. And remember the lines that follow it:
"I've been trying to find the meaning, so I can write it down"
It is an interesting way of putting thoughts on paper without simply saying "I am lonely and depressed, poor me. Boo-hoo"
Instead, he defines loneliness by leaving the listener responsible to "find the meaning' of loneliness. That way, the listener always understands because the listener made up the definition to begin with. It is pretty clever for rock music.

The best way to understand these lyrics is to place yourself mentally in the same smokey apartment doing and saying the same things that the singer is, but without the music. And then ask yourself, why would I say that if I were him. Then you'll get it.

Ummm. No. The songs about how hard it is to write a song. About a writers block. He's trying to write a song, wants to write a song with the line "misery likes company" but can't find the meaning. I think you're reading too much into the song.

Yes Iceman, the song is JUST about writing a song. I have rethought it and looked over the lyrics again. I was wrong.

The possibility that perhaps it is connected in some way to the title of the album, the songs on the album (and the demos), and certain mindset of a 'generation' (which jon has mentioned in his black cloud speeches) has absolutely no relevence here whatsoever.

Albums have no vision. And Jon and the band (and any good band) do not choose very specifically the songs that will and will not be on an album based upon whether they fit into the mindset of the album. Keeping a track on or ditching it is purely a roll of the dice because this is just not the way of an artist.

You are right.
I am a fool

Now is the winter of your discontent, Mr. Iceman. Deformed by disembling nature, mayhaps?...Scarce half made up...

Iceman,
Methinks thou spurns me.

HA
 8)

Love,

B
