Is Jon choosing to sing differently or ....
Hello Folks,
I have just finished listening to Keep the Faith tonight. My mother happens to be staying with me, she said " What album is that " I told her it was KTF. She said JBJ doesnt sing like that anymore , he sounds much worse now  THis shocked me that even my mother had noticed the change in JBJ voice, therefore people in general who arent even die hard fans must notice the change also. Recently Jon has said that he has learnt that a whisper can be as strong as a scream. Do you think the way he is singing is a choice to protect his voice from damage? Or do you think his voice is already damaged and there is no choice but to sing in a softer way ? Even after all the years of abuse Mick Jagger for example doesnt seem to be having any problems. Perhaps there is really something wrong with Jons voice and we are just not being told ? If its a voice problem why doesnt another member of the band step up? I dont know about voice ranges but perhaps the other BJ members dont have the same range ? I like all of Jons ranges and how his voice has grown , I thought the change was him playing around with his vocal tones and he would choose to sing again like he used to when he felt like it, but Im not sure he actually can now. What do u think? Dawn |
from a technical standpoint it take smore to sing a bon jovi song than a stones or an oasis song hence why Mick and Liam can smoke like a chimney and still do the business (well relatively, every time I see oasis liam gets worse and worse)

I think he is trying to save his voice, and I also think he just cant hit the notes the same anymore. But as for being worse, I think its a mom thing LOL! Parents whose offspring become so jovi obsessed like ourselves, they feel they need to vere us away from such a FINE obsession LOL!

Well, anyone who has listened to Jon closely over the past few years can tell that sometimes he is really struggling. You'll notice it most on high notes where he really starts slurring the sounds together and can't articulate. Also, you'll notice most the time he tries squeezing the high notes out of his nose and you get a real sharp, grating sound.
In a live setting, that's more likely to happen. But even in the studio it's becoming apparent that the top range is just gone. Listen to "BTBMB" on TLFR.. he can hardly sing the chorus and it's a shame. At times, he puts the new sound to great use ala YGLABN on TLFR.. perfect fit. Other times, it's sad and makes you miss the old days. Am I the only one that thinks Jon just sounds wierd on "Thank You For Loving Me" ? It doesn't sound that great on crush, but some of the live performances of it were really bad vocally. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound of the lower register now, but you can tell he's lost the confidence in any ability to sing with power and conviction in the higher range. How that will affect future albums remains to be seen. And, of course, there are good nights. |
I think Jon knows his voice isn't what it used to be and has dealt with that fact, unlike some here. As a result, he adjusts his vocals on albums accordingly and in some instances has done it very well, especially songs like The Distance and Undivided, Just Older, etc. Once people get it that his voice has changed, the more peaceful this place would be.

It's nasal, as simple as that.

Didnīt he say on TLFR-DVD that he thinks now that you can say more with a whisper than with a scream? So he has "changed" the way he sings nowadays.

what could he have done to his voice that he cant reach the notes anymore, maybe it was all the screaming in the early days when he had to take steriods for it and now its perminately damaged?
If thats the case hes got balls to adjust and carry on without mentioning it. It would be very frustrating if u wanted to sing a certain way that u used to, it would feel like having a handicap that everyone is talking about and commenting on. I think if we knew there was a problem and he addressed it publicly then the fans would leave it alone and understand its not his choice and support him through the adjustment. The way he sings now is good its just different, and it leaves u wondering where the old voice is. Dawn |
