New Def Leppard- Best Of

To any Def Leppard fans, they are releasing a new 'Best Of' in October, it is confirmed on their website. I've got to wonder if they will really put any tracks from their last albums (Slang, X, Euphoria) and any new songs. But I am hoping it will be a good album from them.

What a rip off theyve hardly released any new material since Vault

That what i thought. But hope some good new track will be there.

Javier 09-08-2004 04:24 AM

Yeah I see it as a rip off, hopefully they will put some songs on there that weren't on Vault, and wonder How much material from Slang, Euphoria and X will be on there???
and a new track has to be a must.

There's gonna be different versions of it, one with two CD's. The extra track is going to be some 60's cover. I'll quote:

The new compilation will be available in various different formats. For example, the tracklisting of the North American version will be different than the UK/European version, and on some markets a limited edition double CD will be released, including a brand new Def Leppard version of a classic hit song from the 60s. Furthermore, a DVD of "BEST OF DEF LEPPARD" will also be available, containing some 30 promo videos from 1983-2002.

So that package has videos from Pyromania to X. Kind of lame that they put that dvd out since they just released all their videos 2 years ago. And the only new thing on that dvd will be 2 videos from X. Although no-one´s forcing me to buy it.

Dave 1986 09-09-2004 01:01 PM

Hopefully with this new DVD they'll actually improve the picture quality this time as they didn't on the previous DVD's. (especially In the Round In Your Face, the picture quality is horrible) And also, they should at least include a Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound feature this time.

I suppose I would buy it for the sake of the 2 X promo videos although I don't see why they don't just release a new live DVD from the X tour including the Now and LLWTG vids. That would be a much more worthy purchase.

Javier 09-15-2004 09:59 AM

this is the tracklisting for UK/Europe/Japan according to the official wesite:

1. POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME
2. PHOTOGRAPH
3. LOVE BITES
4. LET'S GET ROCKED
5. TWO STEPS BEHIND
6. ANIMAL
7. HEAVEN IS
8. ROCKET
9. WHEN LOVE & HATE COLLIDE
10. ACTION
11. LONG, LONG WAY TO GO
12. MAKE LOVE LIKE A MAN
13. ARMAGEDDON IT
14. HAVE YOU EVER NEEDED SOMEONE SO BAD
15. ROCK OF AGES
16. HYSTERIA
17. BRINGIN' ON THE HEARTBREAK

It seems like a rip off.
But it also says on the website that this will be a replacement for 1995's vault, so now vault is off production and this is the Greatest hits that are gonna be on sale from DL at record stores.

Bleeding Purist 09-15-2004 12:20 PM

It's bullsh** is what it is. Bad marketing and business decisions.

First, someone really needs to sit the band and label down and explain to them that Long Long Way To Go is NOT the hit single they think it has potential to be. It's the type of song that the casual listener would hear and go "that Def Leppard, all their sh** sounds the same." Worse, it's not even written by the band.

Second, I realize this is basically Vault replaced....and that it is pretty much the singles compiled. Ok. Where the F**K is Promises, Goodbye, Slang, Work It Out, All I Want Is Everything, and Now???? Promote your albums you freakin dipshits!! Pyromania and Hysteria are on average 20 years old! A Best Of is the perfect opportunity to expose casual fans to material other than just crap from Pyro, Hysteria, and Adrenalize. I guarandamntee you if they had done this they'd get people realizing they do have other worthy albums besides the ones released in the 1980s and to go buy them!

Was there really any demand for this?

Where is the second box set volume?

Probably not from the fans but I’m guessing because 2018 marks 40 years since the bands formation and their recent nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Don't most people just go on Spotify and find "This is Def Leppard" nowadays?

They most probably do. But like I say, the demand is most probably not mainly from fans if at all. Usual marketing/contract-filling stuff plus with a certain holiday season looming as well.

Like with any greatest hits album from any band, it's for casual fans and potential new ones. I won't be buying it myself as I already have everything it's offering, save for the new songs which i can purchase individually if I really wanted to. Like you, I'm only clamoring for either new material or Deluxe Editions/Box Sets.

Captain_jovi 10-12-2018 09:44 PM

A remix of Rock On is considered one of the "new songs"? Hard pass.

Captain Walrus 10-12-2018 11:41 PM

That 2004 best of was my first Def Leppard album. Remember listening to it when I was on the train on the way to the open day for where I ended up going to Uni ... it's now been 10 years since I graduated. Man, time flies!

My first was Vault in 2003, the 2CD edition with the 2nd disc containing live tracks from the Don Valley Stadium gig in 1993. Already familiar with some of the hits beforehand and I did already have a “copy” of X the previous year, but Vault formed the soundtrack to that summer for me and made me really fall for this band.

Yet I still picked up the 2004 Best Of (2CD version) in early 2005. Can’t remember exactly why, especially when I could have bought something like High ‘n’ Dry or On Through the Night (albums I was still yet to hear) instead.

Indeed it does! I have a similar experience with that album.

Def Leppard was my very first concert 10 years ago and in the months leading up to it, I listened to a lot of that 'Best of' album on my way to school leading up to the show. When Love and Hate Collide was my favorite. I thought the show was amazing, but I didn't know any better back then. Now I think they're just OK live.

I'm beginning to think I watched "Live In the Round" way too much and it just can't be topped, particularly without Steve's stage performance. I just saw them last Saturday with 8th row tickets. I definitely enjoyed the show, but there was still something missing on a personal level and I had that feeling back when I first saw them on the Adrenalize tour. Maybe my expectations in my mind are too high. Maybe I just overplayed them. I guess the best I can describe the feeling is "robotic."

Journey absolutely slayed me in contrast, but I only recently started getting to know their material beyond the obvious so everything was fresh and performed with heart. I'm in love now.

Dave 1986 10-14-2018 04:21 PM

It's just occured to me looking at the tracklist again that (with the exception of "Bringin' on the Heartbeak") there is nothing from the first two albums. The 2nd disc mainly focuses on 1996 onwards. I think Best Of (2004 2CD version) and Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection are the still the better choice for any newcomers.

steel_horse75 12-05-2018 12:40 AM

Didn’t they release a greatest hits in 95/96ish called The Vault.
Do they need 3 greatest hits albums?
Must be Christmas!

Captain_jovi 12-05-2018 06:26 AM

Plus the Rock Hall nomination.

Bounce7800 12-05-2018 12:56 PM

Just saw an advert for this on the TV, plugging the Personal Jesus cover. What is the need for that, sounds like they've done nothing with it.

I saw Def Leppard several times on their 2008 tour and they were just ok. I'd previous seen them several times before that and they used to be really great in the 90s, but seriously started to go downhill in the 2000's mainly because everytime I saw then Joe seemed to be having voice issues....

However, I just saw them do they whole Hysteria set last week and I have to say they were magnificent, the best I've seen them since the 90's. Joe is clearly doing something different vocally and it's really working for him. He was fantastic! One of the best shows I've seen by any band....
