Borderline/edge of a broken heart single

Hi

Does anybody know why the band released these two non-album tracks as a single? The single didn't become a huge hit as far as I know so it is really a collectors item. I like those songs very much and they're good enough to be on SWW. Do you think they did regret it after SWW was released that these two tracks couldn't be on the album?

Aloha !

First of all, they have never been released at the same time on the same single.

Borderline was released in 1986 right before the Bad Name single was released in the rest of the world. It was released in Japan only.

Edge Of A Broken Heart was released in 1987 in the USA as a radio single only.

Jon and Richie often have said they should've released it because it would've been a massive hit. However, they've forgotten that it actually was released in the USA and it bombed; it entered at the 38th spot, but was gone the week after it. Jon nowadays thinks it should've been on Slippery.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

I totally agree. It should have replaced Social Disease. I just don't care for this song.

It's not only the band who decides what will be a single. Esp.in the last years we learned that the main say has the record company that sometimes releases songs against the band's wish.

So why Borderline was published in Japan probably can only be answered by Mercury Japan.

The release of Borderline was decided by the band. They wanted to see how the new material would be appreciated by releasing a b-side with album tracks as b-sides. In this way they did not have to release any a-side material as a single.

Oh........God. It never ends.

I remember quite clearly there was enough buzz about the song from people who managed to catch it on the radio. It was mostly inaccessible though and people weren't bothered to go pick up a soundtrack for a pisspoor movie for a single song.

It did not bomb. It didn't have the exposure neccessary for it to even have a chance. We'll talk bomb after it's been on a regular studio album, released as a single AND video. Otherwise...this stupid speculation, particularly about things that happened in the 80s by people who weren't even there needs to stop.

Where did you get this info? What's the source? Do you know what a B Side is?

B-side - Side 2 of a 45 RPM Vinyl single and later, Cassette singles. Use of the term continues to this day to describe additional tracks on a CD single.

Exactly what Bon Jovi or 7,800 F single release did Borderline initially appear as the B-side for? It's been a B-side, but not initially.

Borderline didn't have a single F**king thing to do with the pending release of Slippery When Wet. It was an independent single for a country that was sh** crazy over Bon Jovi already before the US or any other part of the world.

It was released as a radio single because of the succes of Slippery in the US. Bon Jovi gave the song away for a soundtrack because they thought it wasn't good enough and the recordcompany decided to release this song.

In your opinion it didn't bomb. I think a single that made it into the Billboard 100 for only 1 week is a single that bombed. No matter if they made a video for it or if they didn't.

No it isn't. I for sure know more then anyone else about the Bon Jovi discography and this is not meant as bragging.

An old interview with Bon Jovi I once read. He was asked about Borderline during the Crush tour and his reply was that it was released in Japan to see how Slippery would do.

Not true. Plus it's never even been track one on the single Borderline either, that one was Prayer.

No, you don't. I've seen you put wrong information out more than once. It concerns me because you are promoting incorrect information by speculating. Too many people here really do think of you as a knowledgable source because you chime in on anything and everything. I don't remember the exact instances, but I do note that on more than a few occasions you made statements regarding Bon Jovi facts that were in error that those of us who were actually around and paying attention could refute. It wouldn't bother me so much if you were actually accurate on all levels. But you use a combination of available printed data both accurate and erroneous along with your own pure speculation. Then people here start parroting you.

You need to keep in mind that there are plenty of printed publications that got it wrong...especially those in recent years that have cropped up since Crush. The internet is crap for accurate factual information regarding Bon Jovi BEFORE 1995. The 80s are a veritable dark ages on the internet.

I'll concede you were correct regarding Borderline and it's track list because I cannot find any alternate documentation online to otherwise refute. But I do remember coming across a copy of Borderline that had only Borderline and Burning For Love (Live) at Tower Records. It was not a bootleg. There was no Living On A Prayer or Hardest Part is the Night (Live). There were no Slippery tracks on it. It was in 1992 that I saw it. One easy way for me to remember this is cuz if I saw the release you are referring to..I would have went ape sh** over Hardest Part is the Night being a live version at that point in time when I had absolutely no live version of any 7,800 F tracks. I don't care for Borderline and the CD I saw did not grab me.
