Richie part in interview with Heather from magazine
Here are some snippets from Heather’s Interview in Ladies Home Journal – November issue. It seems they have a new dog and Harley doesn't live anymore. But I'm not that sure if Tico is very excited about a Chihuahua named after him LOL.
Locklear has been married happily for 10 years to Richie Sambora, 45, lead guitarist for Bon Jovi. They delight in raising their 7 year old daughter, Ava Elizabeth, and romping with Tico, their Chihuahua, and Lambchop, their Maltese. LHJ: So when you have a little onscreen romance, how will your husband feel? Locklear: He’ll hate that I’m saying this, but Richie didn’t like all the sexy stuff on Melrose Place and I don’t blame him. When something romantic with me would be coming up and he was watching, he’d say, “Tell me when I should walk out of the room,” He’d leave and come back after the scene. LHJ: Did you ever consider having another child? Locklear: I loved Ava so much from the start, but I actually had a hard first year. I had the postpartum thing and didn’t see the lights for a full year. Like at three months I was going, “Wow, where’s my life?” It just was tough. And I was working on Melrose Place so it was really hard to have the husband, the career, and the baby. So it truly took a year. And then I would think every year, “maybe another one.” And my mom was like, “If you wait too long, you’re not going to want to do it.” Now, every once in a while I go, “Well, a seven-year difference isn’t too bad.” LHJ: How does your husband feel? Locklear: Richie is an only child, and his mother was an only child. So he has a whole different outlook. I came from a bigger family, so I worry about how not to spoil her. For me, there’s guilt and worry galore, always. And he’s like, “What do you mean? Love her. What’s the problem?” I think I do give her more freedom than probably I should. So, that I struggle with. Richie is great with her. He does the night shift, and I do the day shift. He watches Finding Nemo all the time. He’ll watch any movies with her. He’s a good daddy. LHJ: So you are the only one concerned about spoiling her? Locklear: I watch out for it a lot. But Richie is like, “She’ll be fine. Give me a kiss. You girls are against me.” It’s also the girl-boy thing. He’s like, “You girls.” LHJ: Does your daughter love to hear him call you two “girls?” Locklear: Oh yea. She also says this funny thing. Richie is Catholic and he taught her to say, “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.” So she prays “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost” and then she adds “In the name of the mother, the daughter and the Holy Ghost” [laughs], and I go, “Oh Lord, she is my daughter.” LHL: Does Ava go to Bon Jovi shows? Locklear: She actually just started to this past year. Jon Bon Jovi will bring the daughters of the band members on and then he’ll sing to them. One night Ava was the only one there, the other kids had gone home, so Jon goes, “Come on out.” And she came out thinking that the stage was hers, in front of like 90,000 people. And she was dancing when Jon was trying to sing with her. LHJ: Daughters can sometimes become fashion critics – is Ava? Locklear: Sometimes she goes, “Mom, that’s not cute” or “that’s too sexy.” Or she protects Daddy: “Oh no, not without Daddy.” I’m like, “Wow. Not without Daddy?” LHJ: How did Ava feel about your teaming up with Hilary Duff in The Perfect Man? Locklear: When I told her that I had to go to Toronto for two months, she said “Mommy, you’re not going to leave me again, are you?” And I said, “But it’s with Hilary Duff.” Ava said, “Okay, you can go but I have to meet her.” So she came and met her and Hilary was just great. LHJ: So did you give Hilary any advice about men? Locklear: Oh, we had a few little discussions. I won’t even go there. LHJ: You’d know what to tell her. You’re married to a rock star who’s had lots of women chasing him. Locklear: I know! When I first saw Richie, I prodded my girlfriends, saying, “Get me that man.” He was a little hesitant, but I pushed. To this day he’ll say, “We got married really quick.” He teases but he’s also very romantic. He still plays music to me. He’s like, “Whatever you want, Heather.” LHJ: What does Richie do that irritates you? Locklear: Oh, I can’t think of a single thing [laughs] LHJ: C’mon Locklear: You know, it’s always dumb stuff. “Put it away.” “Lock the door.” And since I’m back at work, the earphone thing. He comes home late and he won’t want to wake me. So sometimes at 12 or whatever time in the morning, he turns on the TV in our bedroom and puts earphones on so I won’t hear the sound. But there’s blinding light from the screen and I wake up from his snoring. I’ll start to turn off the TV and he’ll say, “I’m [snore] still watching.” LHJ: So this is the glamorous life. Locklear: Ha – I kid him and say “Aren’t you a rock star?” Actually, he doesn’t look too bad with earphones on because he wears them when he’s recording. So I just imagine him with a cowboy had and a guitar and it’s cute. He comes home at midnight and he knows that I leave at 4:45 a.m. so we’re missing each other. We both love our work so we give up certain things to do our work and at other times we give up our work to have our life with each other. LHJ: Are you romantic? Locklear: Not as much as Richie. I am, but my ideal is to keep surprising him. He still thinks I’m a little kooky. |
