Getting Tonsils Out

I went to the doctor today with a sore throat, and, seeing as I've had tonsilitus about 3 times a year since I was about 11, he said I'd have to go into hospital and then get my tonsils taken out.
I have to go in in 2 weeks. Has anyone else had their tonsils taken out? Does it hurt? And is it true that you get to eat heaps of ice cream?

I got them out when I was about three and don't remember anything about it. But I think it's true about the ice creams. In fact I think ice creams are advisable whenever you have a sore throat 8)

Just don't be scared - it's an easy thing, and everything will be fine, you'll see :D

They don't advise ice cream though because any dairy product can make your throat worse. Apparently they give jelly now.

I got them out when I was 17/18. I hurt like hell - well not the procedure but afterwards - but you get NICE pain killers :D I hate going under anesthesia as I always make a fool out of myself when I am about to pass over lol. Other than that it was a breeze.............

Yes to the ice cream :)

LOL yes it's true about the ice cream - I never got my tonsils taken out, but I remember about 15 years ago when my friend got hers out and I visited her everyday for the ice creams ;) ahhh those were the days!

It should be easy for you. They do them with lasers now. I had mine out when I was 4. I woke up during the surgery and still remember it very clearly. It's probably why I can't bear the thought of having surgery for any reason. And if it's not bad enough that I woke up during surgery... the damn things grew back. I was rather shocked in 1994 when the doctor told me, "You have tonsilitis" and I whispered, "I don't have tonsils" and he said, "They grow back." You will get lots of ice cream, jello, pudding, and soup.

I was thinking the exact same thing recently cause my throats been sore all weekend due to the smoke in work.

I've been gargling lemon juice concentrate stuff. I read somewhere that the citric acid in it kills the germs or whatever that's makign your tonsils hurt.

I only get it about once a year in winter fr some reason but i might get them out if i still can at my age.

how long are you out of action? i remember a doctor telling me before itd be between 2 to 6 weeks which seems a bit excessive to me. anyone have an idea?
