Oh no, not another topic about Jon's voice!!
Oh yes, it is the topic of the day, or may I say the week or the month or the year... let's be honest, it's been the topic of the last 20 years...
Now before you all start jumbing at me for saying this, let me explain. I have posted a poll here before, about Jon's vocals compared to other classics, and the result was Freddie Mercury in 1'st place... that is true, we don't need Jon to be the best vocalist in history, we've always loved him the way he was, which is phonemenal by the way. I think that Jon's voice has always had what it took to pull all Bon Jovi songs, just take a look at "My guitar lies bleeding in my arms" or the astonishing cover of "Little help from my friends". So Jon has managed to keep all the critiques who come hard at him quiet, and they are plenty ofcourse, but come on Jon, 100,000,000 fans can't be wrong isn't just a clache is it, this is really going inside you head, it's filling it. I have read at several places that they dont rehearse anymore, maybe on the crush tour dvd interview, he says, we are a band that doesnt need to rehearse anymore. Well yeah, as long as u keep doing Bad\Shout and sleep and the same old songs live on every tour. That is so wrong, excuse me, no body quits rehearsing. Ofcourse im not taking his words literaly, but it is almost the truth. It has gotten into them: In 1990 Jon took voice lessons... why? Because he was under pressure, there were matchers, there was a grunge culture emerging, he had to do something, and he did, fortunately. So what about 2004, are there any matchers? No, and as the fans of "the band that sits on top of what they do" as David says in an interview, Bon Jovi's fans are being taken for granted, almost meaningless albums are coming out as "a gift to die-hard fans", i think, they are just doing whats easier, Let's rediscover ourselves! I can't buy that, sorry... This is emotional blackmail, if not a real blackmail where we pay money to buy albums and attend concerts to show that we "Keep the faith", but i have to say that everybody gets what he deserves. During the 1980's they built a rock band, during the 1990's they astonishingly broke through expectations and now they are left alone in the market. I read a lot of interviews, and i really hate what i see, on one occasion Jon comments about the mtv music awards and says "Shit, there's not a single song writer out there!" i want to ask, what about the songwriting of "Bounce"? The bottom line is, WE ARE BEING TAKEN FOR GRANTED, there is no creative material anymore, we got a live album that sounds like its been recorded in a studio, cut, normalized and everything, not to mention that we already expected how every song would sound except maybe for "In a& out of love". We got a "Greatest hits with a twist album", it is a die-hard fan album, well Bon Jovi runs in my blood, yet, i cant swallow anything on that "thing". And "Bounce", well, i dont want to sound real hard, except for 2 or 3 songs, everything else is a filler, but we will love it ofcourse, it comes from the guys "who are still doing what they were doing 20 years ago".... And what about the concerts, i will still refer to the crush tour, see the interview, jon says that there are people who follow them around at every stage, and he feels sorry for them as they hear the same material over and over, so they try to change some of the lists, but that is not the case unfortunately... he happily talks about how he and richie while walking to the stage try to remember how to play a song that has just crossed his mind, and they hadnt played it for years... i find that very very unhumble,if there is such a word, what if u actually dont remember the lyrics or the melody!! I think its time for them, HIM mainly, as he takes all the credit at every turn, to start appreciating that the 100,000,000 fans will always be his loving fans, no matter what! p.s. Hope to get some comments on this, i want to know if i'm the only one with this opinion here!! another p.s: Why is the poll of richie's contribution still stuck on the main page?! |

The Jersey Syndicate tour found Jon with a new and improved voice. He would hold back and let loose at just the right moments, which to me..only added to the dramatics. The live version of Blood On Blood on the New Jersey the Videos VHS (and on the official site) is a good example of that. He doesn't do it exactly as on the album. He holds back more. But when he lets loose...it's that much more effective and rewarding..without constantly having to do it. |
Tooka man, when it really comes down to it, Jon and co. are doing a Job, they may keep doing it because they love it, they may have a huge die-hard fan base and they may appreciate those fans putting them where they are but I don’t think any band “owes” anything to their following in real terms.
They sure ain’t doing it for the money anymore so if they want to come out and try something different, or Jon’s voice is taking a hit after gigging since he was 15 or so and you don’t like the product they release then don’t buy it. You say you’ve got Jovi “running through your blood” and I’d guess a lot of people here understand where you are coming from so they have obviously had a profound influence on your life… more than a fair deal for the few hundred pounds we’ve probably all spent on the albums and concerts (or few grand on guitars and amps eh rs8mb0r8? ;)) In short, they wrote and released songs that meant something to you and in return you put them at the top of their field. There’s probably little financial reason for them to continue now so you’ve got to believe that they think they can still write stuff that is going to mean something to people… Jon may not have the same vocal range he did, they may release something a bit different that misses the mark with the target audience but implying that they are blackmailing and taking “us” for granted is a little “bunny boiler” dontcha think? Sure, I was disappointed by Crush, yeah I can hear Jon’s voice going from time to time live but this band have provided a soundtrack to my life this far… surely we should be grateful for the impact they have already made, and I for one would go against the consensus and say that there was a lot on Bounce that I thought was fantastic and proved they can still cut it writing wise… I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the next album. |
Great post Rashburn!!
