Hey Jess--have you been able to find the UK release "Days Go By"? It's a combo of songs from Golden Road and Be Here.

Becky 05-30-2005 12:47 AM

Here's a pretty good article I just stumbled across:

Keith Urban
Be Here
Capitol Nashville

Here it is--the grown up, mature, adult Keith Urban everyone has been waiting for. Thanks to the reissue of his Ranch recordings this past spring, it’s easy to contrast the 1997 Urban with the 2004 model. As this album shows, he’s a seasoned performer, polished without being bland, technically astounding while leaving the emotion high in the mix, and aware enough to understand the radio play game. His first, self-titled album went platinum and the follow-up, Golden Road, recently hit the double platinum mark. Naturally, this new album maintains the vibe and sound of those successful predecessors.

Some might wish Urban would throw away the rule book and play purely on instinct, but he's also a smart businessman who understands that he has found a perfect niche which works. "For me, it's just a matter of getting more comfortable in my own skin. I hope that there's more of me coming through in the music. I think that comes from getting comfortable with myself as a person and as a musician, but also from getting comfortable in the studio. It's a daily challenge, ya know, you gotta rise to the expectations, of your own, of those who've seen you before, and of the friends they've brought along, especially the ones they've dragged along.”

The first single, "Days Go By," is typical Urban, "Tonight I Wanna Cry" is a breathtaking tearjerker, while "Better Life" has that bright optimism that has made Urban so popular with the younger set. There is a more philosophical tone to the lyrics than he has exhibited before. "If there was a theme to this album, it would be the big questions I ask just like anybody else: What are we doing here? What's life about?"

Like many imports, Urban has embraced the country music format with gusto but manages to keep an individual sound even at his most down-home. Shania managed to do the same, as did Olivia Newton John back in the 70s. And Olivia was a fellow Aussie. “Yeah, she was a big deal when I was young.” Urban so loved America and country music that he was dreaming of the stars and stripes before he was ten years old. “We moved around a lot in the city of Brisbane when I was very young. Then my dad decided it was time to get back to his rural upbringing. He bought a property in a place called Caboolture, a farming town about an hour north of Brisbane. We moved up there and lived on this 12-acre farm. We had our own cows for milking -- well, one cow, singular, to tell the truth. He wanted our family to be self-sufficient from the land. I inherited this kind of love for the American dream. I fell in love with the music, the cars and the whole idea of America.”

Urban made the long move to America in the mid 90s and turned a few heads in Nashville with a hip young country rock outfit, The Ranch. His solo career kicked off in 2000 when he finally found the right formula for country radio. His Australian-ness was lessening, but he still had an unusual vocal tone, which made him interesting to radio program directors and to listeners. Urban won the Country Music Association's prestigious Horizon Award in 2001, as well as the Top New Male Vocalist Award at the 2001 Academy of Country Music Awards. Then came the breakthrough Golden Road in 2002, which included hits like "Somebody Like You," "Raining On Sunday," "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me" and "You'll Think of Me." Be Here is the perfect follow up, indeed it’s almost a sequel to Golden Road. There are plenty of miles left on Urban’s engine.

Urban Dweller
Australia's country crooner, Keith Urban, goes down under with Siobhan Flaherty

Keith Urban is already busting up the charts in the United States, Canada, and Australia. This year's country music's Male Vocalist of the Year and winner of Most Outstanding CD for his US release "Be Here", has now taken on Europe, opening for rocker, Bryan Adams. Urban's blend of country and rock, fused together with brilliant guitarmanship, emotional vocals, and blond surfer good looks, has captured the eyes, ears and hearts of a brand new audience. His first internationally released CD, Days Go By, will be available on the 30th of May. Here, the relaxed and charming 37 year old opens up and shares his thoughts on music, women and his love for the Irish.

Are you urban or rural?

Well, I grew up rural. Now I'm urban. But if I had a family, I'd definitely be rural again.

How did a rural Australian wind up as a country artist in Nashville, Tennessee?

Destiny, I think. My dad had a collection of country music albums when I was growing up and I listened to them and would play guitar along with them. On the back of the albums, they always listed Nashville as the place they were recorded so I guess, even way back then, I knew that was the place I needed to go and wanted to go.

Once you made the move, did they find you an oddity or intriguing?

I think they found me annoying! I didn't exactly fit the image of what was coming out of Nashville at the time.

Was that because you were too rock and roll? Or was it because you were from a different country?

Yes..........in a word! I came out of the Aussie club scene, which is very hard rock and roll, but I also had my country roots. I think I was true to myself, at the time, but the pendulum hadn't swung to that side yet.

Did you finally get them to see it your way? Or did you change your way to get them to see you?

I bit of both, I guess. I played the club scene in Nashville for a long time before any record company came around. So from that experience, I probably picked up more of a feel for what was being recorded and produced in Nashville. But I never thought "I've got to be more this or that before they sign me." I think the pendulum just finally swung the other way and I was already there, on that side.

Do you prefer live shows or recording?

I love both. I love the interaction with an audience. I love getting out there and playing with the band and getting that feedback from the fans. But I love recording as well. I enjoy the creative process, putting it all together. I also enjoy making the videos, which I know a lot of artists don't like. But for me, it's all enjoyable.

How do European audiences compare to American audiences?

It's been awesome. I'm amazed that so many here are as familiar with the songs, really. We've toured for so many years in the States that we've developed a wonderful fan base there. So usually whenever you play a new market, people come in with their arms crossed like 'What's this about?". Australia's the same way so you feel like you've got to prove yourself a bit more. But I show up every night and give it all I've got, no matter where we are. I don't take anything for granted.

You're an attractive, single guy....

Uh oh..

What attracts you to a woman?

A sense of humor, intelligence and self confidence. I like someone who's not afraid to voice her opinion, even if it differs from my own. And I tend to be intense sometimes so it's nice to have someone around who can lighten you up and make you laugh.

What about physically? Do you have a "type"?

No, I don't really. I know it sound cliche' but it's really what radiates from the inside that determines beauty to me. A woman who is comfortable in her own skin is very sensual. I guess you could say I'm the jeans and t-shirt type. Someone organic and adventurous.

Now that you're gracing the cover of magazines and winning all kinds of awards, is it easier or harder to meet women?

It's hard to really get to know anyone just because we work so much. We're always on the road and if I'm not driving someplace, I'm in soundcheck, or working out, or at a greet meet or an interview. Then after the show, we drive to the next place. That's just my life right now.

Do you also find it more difficult to determine if a women is interested in who you are or for who they see on the magazine covers?

I think I can tell pretty quickly. When I do meet someone, it's usually through some mutual friend. In most cases, if your friend finds someone fun to be with, you will as well. And if something's meant to be out of that, then it will be.

Are you a romantic, flowers and candy sort of guy?

Oh, definitely! Flowers, candy, cards, the whole thing.

And do you have an 'other'?

I have a guitar I fool around with!

Have you been able to explore the Irish countryside? Do some sight-seeing?

Not as much as I'd like. I was told to go kiss the Blarney Stone but I'm not sure if that was a legitimate suggestion or an insult of some kind!

Finally, how would you describe the Irish?

I love the natural charm and wit of the Irish. I like the sparring, you know, and you're great storytellers, as well. And I like the spirituality, or the way spirituality is symbolized with the Celtic crosses and symbols like the Claddagh rings. The Aussies and the Irish are kindred spirits, in a way. I think there's a bit of gypsy blood in the lot of us.
