Friday - Carter USM. Fantastic 1993 party. A dancing, strangers-hugging celebration of a gig. So old school it had a You Fat Bastards chant and EMF supporting.

Saturday - Leonard Cohen. Just the best impulse purchase. Hypnotic, charming, precise, beautiful. Show of the year hands down.

Sunday - Extreme. Pretty close to show of the year. Way better than they ever were. They know they are a club band playing to fans and played the hell out of every song. So much interaction and spontenaity and the best new drummer. Really loose and powerful. No fat. No solos. No extended jams or embarrassing rapping. Two frontmen in Nuno and Gary. Great medlies and teases. Worth every penny ;)

He's touring down here with Paul Kelly next year, I'm tossing up whether to get tix.

Coheed & Cambria on Wednesday, playing the whole of their Good Apollo Volume 1 album in sequence, with an encore made up of a medley of songs from their other albums and a cover of Iron Maiden's The Trooper. Really good in general ... the songs are strong (although obviously when playing a full album, especially one with several songs that are over seven minutes long, there tends to be some filler), the band are great musicians and exciting to watch (although I do feel like they would benefit from having a visual aspect to their shows, like Tool or Muse). The last song of the main set, The Final Cut, was both awesome and incredibly overlong, stretching it out from 6 minutes to about 15 with duelling guitar solos and theremin (including the quite amazing spectacle of the frontman playing the theremin with his face and hair while still playing the guitar) was very cool, but then the ten minute drum solo following that pushed it way too far. Still, I'd give this show 8/10

On wednesday I'm off to see thw Wildhearts, then on Thursday it's all about Sleeping States. After that I'm off to see The Noughts and Crosses Band. The last live act I saw was Jonquil and they were excellent (though I thought the sound quality wasn't up to much).
