Back in mid April i went to see The Doobie Brothers. It was great. Only thing is that they played two nights, and the night I didn't go, Paul Rodgers was on stage as a guest star. I picked the wrong night eh?

Richard Ashcroft, last night at Derby Assembly Rooms. I got pretty last minute tickets (the gig sold out very very quickly) so we were stuck on the balcony looking mainly at the side of the stage. My view was also nicely blocked by a mass of cables, excellent. That aside, Richard was in fine form. His voice sounded good, could tell a word when he was talking to the auidence between songs, but hey. How many guitar strings did that guy get through, though? The amount of guitar changes mid-song was incredible!

To be honest (probably like 95%) of the people in there last night, I'm really there for The Verve stuff. Don't get me wrong, he solo material is good, very underrated and his new album is fantastic. But the response to his Verve songs was twice the response to his solo songs. Of his solo songs New York was fantastic and Break The Night With Colours was a crowd pleaser. From his Verve selection we got a nice acoustic rendition of History. A 'show and sockless' Bittersweet Symphony sent everyone crazy, a perfect end to any gig.

Eric Clapton at the MEN in Machester last Tuesday. It was a good show. Eric is an amazing player and the two guitarists that played with him were very good too. One of them is called Derek Trucks. Some of you Americans may have heard of the Derek Trucks band, that is a sort of old fashioned rock 'n' roll/blues band. Derek is a finger picker, who plays an amazing slide guitar.

There were 12 musicians altogether. 3 guitarists including Eric, a bassist, drummer. 2 saxophonists, a tumpeter, 2 keyboardists and a 2 female backing singers. They played a wide range of things from Eric's career, with around 4 or 5 songs from the new album which all sounded good, a few that I didn't know and around 5 or 6 well known hits (JJ Cale's Cocaine and After Midnight, Bob Marley's I Shot the Sherriff, Crossroads that I can't remember who recorded it originally, Wonderful Tonight, Layla, and a couple more I can't remember off the top of my head). I was sat at on the bottom tear on the right with a decent view of the stage and a good view of one of the large screens.

Robert Cray and his band played for arround half an hour as support. They were good and I'm gonna check out some of Robert Cray's songs, although I think they over amplified a little. Eric played for arround 2 hours. Overall the performace was good, but the bass and the drums were no where near as good on Crossroads as what they were when Eric used to play with Cream. Although it's understandable I suppose because Jack Bruce on the bass and Ginger Baker on the drums are two great musicians that are up there with the very best on their respectable instruments.

A bassist, you mean the very cool, one and only Nathan East!

corkimp 05-13-2006 12:40 PM

either it was bon jovi bounce tour dublin or when red hot chili peppers played slane (can't remember which was last!) in 2003 :s i need to go to concerts more!!!

† Ą˛˛Ą † 05-16-2006 08:40 PM

The last concert I attended was an Oasis one in July of last year, the same day Stevie Gerrard said he was staying at Liverpool !!!!

They were pretty good but the venue (The Rose Bowl) was so large that the sound kinda ddrained away, would rather see them in a more compact stadium. Liam Gallagher was his brilliant best though !

Emil 05-16-2006 11:14 PM

I saw Quireboys in London last weekend! It was truly amazing. Spike sings a lot better live.

Back from 3 days of Sasquatch!

Friday:
HIM - probably would have been better if I had known any of his songs
Bauhaus - not impressed.
caught the end of Wolfmother but was in no position to really see how they were ... though I really meant to check them out.
NIN ---- ****ING AWESOME - I am in love with Trent Reznor (for a while at least)

Saturday:
David Ford - simply amazing. What a guy!!!!!
Caught in a hailstorm - drenched from hip to toes - bailed for the rest of the day and crashed at 8pm till 8am.
missed: Tragically Hip, The Shins (though am not sorry), The Flaming Lips, Ben Harper... sigh...

Sunday:
Big City - great - gotta go and look for their stuff
Nada Surf - nice - gotta get their stuff
Pretty Girls Make Graves - I just don't like them, don't get any better with each show either
Ben Lee - seemed pretty good
Arctic Monkey - NICE - very nice
The Decemberists - I just don't get them... boring
Matisyahu - what an idiot..... what a total idiot!
Queens of the Stoneage - YES! Gotta love Josh Homme - he is so 'sensible and never outrageous' lol

LOL. I still love Josh anyway. Did you tell him I said hi? :)

Didn't know Nada Surf still existed, btw.

I did and he played 'burn the witch' ;) He really is quite cool and I am sure the security guards hate him.

You have no idea how cute you are!! :D

He started out with "I don't care" [and I was thinking of you the entire time], played "state of the union" and "cheer up you miserable ****" - he played more but those were the only ones I recognized. He had about a 30 minute set, so there wasn't too much time.

He talked about his wife and how he misses her *yawn*. What was amazing though is that despite the few attendees he really put in a ton of emotions. Which came over really nice and probably what drew in the other people walking by.

It was a bit weird as I think most of the music was recorded and he'd just start up an instrument and the recording took over? So, he'd start the guitar and drop it and the guitar sound was still playing - same with the piano... I guess it is what you do when you don't have a spare band with you?

I didn't realize he was that short. (and he is kind of a dork ;) :p)

Day 2 at about 1:30 is when the hail storm hits and you can see the people in the crowd go mad - you can also see with what force the hail came down - bouncing off the people....

If you watch the 'behind the scenes' you get some cool images of the stage and the gorge and stuff.

Nope. Got nothing else. They were fun and for being such a 'young' band, they had a great stage presence. Very flattering to the audience and a good sense of humor. They talked with the audience which I always like and their accent is cute ;)

I'd go see them again ... They played a little hole in the wall here in Seattle earlier this year but it was sold out before I got wind of it... so, I am glad I did get the chance after all.

Kev I know you want July to come but were still in June :)

I was at BA at Huddersfield that was my last non Jovi gig. I enjoyed myself, he always puts on a tight show. Went with my mate who doesnt really do concerts but she had a great time. However I probably will think twice about seeing him again next time round, to be fair I only went as a favour to my mate - this is the 3rd tour iv seen him on and almost all the shows have been nearly identical :s The best bit of the show is always the end where its just him and his accoustic and we got all for love too :)

Sara 06-06-2006 01:25 PM

Red Hot Chili Peppers - 5th of June :D although I barely 'saw' them... the stage was really far away :P

And some other bands on the same day... Franz Ferdinand, Deftones, Nickelback, etc

Ocean Colour Scene in York last Tuesday. It was an acoustic set, but a really amazing gig. It was a small venue which was good and the band were amazing. Simon Fowler's also a really good singer live. We went in after about 6 pints so where well up for it. We were standing up dancing to some of the hits and getting told off by the security guards.

Someday 06-07-2006 10:00 PM

Monsters Of Rock, last Saturday. Totally AMAZING. Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Journey. All completely fantastic.

Captain Walrus 06-08-2006 08:58 PM

Avenged Sevenfold and Guns N' Roses at Hammersmith Appollo ... well what can I say, still one of the greatest rock bands around, even with only 2 members from the UYI era still in the band... full review to come soonish

spunkywho 06-11-2006 10:19 PM

Black Crowes - probably the most self-indulgent show I've ever seen. Got booed at the end - hehe.

Worth my $15 lawn seats, but not the hour drive to and from the venue.

My son was so disappointed cause they didn't play his favorite song (and that of the crowd according to the boos and yells) Remedy

OH - question: My son (8) picked out a t-shirt http://stores.musictoday.com/store/p...=BCCT05&sfid=2 and looking at it closely this morning, I realize it's got marihuana leaves on it :D Is that kind of inappropriate? Should he not wear it around the neighbor kids? Of course he has no clue what they are....

Jim Bon Jovi 06-11-2006 10:33 PM

lol.

it's barely noticeable

So, that's a 'it's ok' then? It's too late now anyway as it is the 'must wear day and night shirt this week' and he's paraded it off to the dog park, neighborhood, IKEA, etc...... Got no evil looks (like I did from a neighbor when he wore a KISS shirt), so all is well, I suppose.

I'll just make sure he won't wear it to his Dads house, cause that might be asking for trouble...

UKjovi 06-12-2006 03:57 PM
