Are you opinionated ?
I have been told often that I am ... very much ... especially on the net but not only...I admit I am but until few months ago I never thought it was a real *bad thing* it was just a fact for me and I never jump on people throat because of their opinions or beliefs as long as they don't jump at me first (I think) ..I think that to be opinionated is like to be passionate for me . I have opinions and can fight for those .
I checked the (robert & collins) dictionary in english it seems that it is more pejorative than in french to be opinionated but this is not really surprising me ( ) here i'ts common to be vocal and to fight or argue for opinions But don't you say in english *opinions are like a$$hole everbody has one but ..... * (sorry i don't even recall the exact ending of this saying ... this saying doesn't exist in french LOL it maybe proove that being vocal is more or less acceptable depending from where you are born ... ) anyway here is my question are you opinionated or not .. do you think it's a handicap ? |
Aloha !
1.You're not opinionated. You just post the opinion of which you think people will agree with the most so that people will agree with you and you have the feeling that people like you. And it works over here with most people. However, some already notice what I just said and don't take you serious. 2.I am opinionated. However, when I find out that I've got my facts wrong, or have missed parts of the story I am opinionated about, I might change my opinion depending on how important the wrong facts or missing parts are. And no, it's not a handicap. How could it be a handicap? Having an opinion is better than the ones who talk with the masses but inside strongly disagree with something and tell different stories to other persons. Salaam Aleikum, Sebastiaan |

I am really opinionated or not this is certainly not you who can judge this my dear Sebastiaan . I am just asking a question to the ppl posting here ...I didn't ask them do you think I am opinionated ? don't do the shrink with me this is not the purpose. I am not posting about me but asking a question .... period .... Quote:
To be opinionated can be a handicap in some society , when I lived in Japan I experienced it ... there is NO ROOM for being vocal on anything .... ppl are never saying anything about what they think (there is no importance in the person and the individual doesn't count) unless they will get very tough feedback ..if you say something that sounds personal ppl think you are putting yourself on a pedestral (you can check that with the contents of the music magazine for example they don't say it's good or bad don't judge just write technical facts about guitar or piano not what they think about them) and they also ask musicians to talk themselves about their music , even the music journalists don't post their opinions ...in the newspaper you find informations but very few opinions ) so I think being opinionated can be a handicap depends of your sensibility and your background ... theorically everyone would think that it can't be a handicap but in real it can be .... I think ... thanks for your opinion about the fact you think it can't be a handicap though .... |

I do think that being opinionated can be 'bad' in certain circumstances. I know that in some jobs I had, it was not looked well upon for me to have an opinion, particularly if it was contrary to the VPs opinion. Did my career suffer because of it? Absolutely. However, that is a choice I made - I would not want a promotion soley because I kissed a lot of arses - I couldn't stand myself if I was like that. Personally, I am very opinionated, but like Seb, I'd like to think that I can still be open minded about contrary opinions and might change mine if it makes sense to me. I also don't like to be surrounded by people without opinions. I much rather be with someone who has an opinion that differs from mine, as long as they have one. Yes, passion very much comes to mind. I don't like emotionless/unpassionate people at all. At the same time, I don't like people who dismiss others opinions as garbage simply for the reason that it isn't their opinion. |

I have always enjoyed the infos in japan because it sounded *free zoned* and totally non violent (with no opinion there is also NO attack everything is smooth and zen around) but at some point you are asking for something more than pure facts descriptions ... for a journalist in Japan I think that not giving their opinions is not thought as difficult though (I knew few as I worked as translator there )...oriental society (and more particularily Japan) is fonctionning this way.. they have opinions but don't write them don't post them they don't make waves ...after few years I felt frustrated and thought ...so what is an opinion if it's not to be "lived" this is why I posted about the saying in english about opinions .. some think that it doesn't worth to talk /discuss /fight /live for those opinions and some others are extremely vocal depends of what I don't know ? culture , personnality , nationality , gender ? |
I have opnion on things i know about and i listen to other which i don't know about.... But my opnion can be change if or when i realise that other person is right and then i tend to see things differently... But i usaly give great deal about opnion of others...

I am actually surprised that nobody has voted for option number one here. I went for option number three - "Yes but I can change my opinions if I realise that I am wrong" - As results suggest so far, I think that is pretty much the case with everyone really. Especially those who are being honest about themselves.
