if you like a drink you're an alcoholic???
from another board where someone started a thread saying I know you're all borderline alcoholics but what's your favourite drink....
some dude replied: There is no border...... The real truth is that alcoholics drink alcohol, non-alcoholics don't drink alcohol. If you think, "I'm grabbing myself a beer when I get home", you are an alcoholic. If you say to someone, "Let's go to the bar or liquor store and get something to drink." You are an alcoholic. If you enjoy any alcoholic beverages at all, you are an alcoholic. Most alcoholics only think permadrunks are alcoholics, but it's just a matter of degrees, it's the same book and the same story and to discern a difference is splitting hairs. ********************************** true, not true? by his reasoning I'm addicted to sociology lectures if I attend one (couldn't be further from the truth) or you're addicted to boning inanimate objects if you screw a watermelon once  :) what say you? I think our man here is a recovering alcoholic or has been affected personally by one and his way of staying on the wagon is looking at it like that.,,, |
I think there is some truth to it.
If you need alcohol to relax or have a habit of drinking regularly, I do think you might be an alcoholic. It's something I struggle with and worry about. I do enjoy alcohol, I like a glass of wine when I get home from work, I sometimes like to have a beer for happy hour..... Do I get drunk every time I have a drink? No, I usually know when to stop, but not all alcoholics are drunk all the time, nor do they always drink till they are drunk. I think there are various degrees of alcoholism. |
I think alocohlic is one person who can't pass a day without drinking alcohol and when he is not drinking, he just not be himself....
Not everyone who drink are alcoholic.... noway... I was drinking like twice a day when i was in bahrain but now nothing and i can go months without drinking and never get desperate for it.... |

everyone has a different opinion of what an alcoholic is. Mines is pretty sdimilar. if you couldn't go a day without a drink it's fair to say you've got a problem but very few people fall into that category. even if they feel like a drink but dont want one I think they;re ok. this guy's just taken it to extremes. I know I drink too much but I'm a student in the west of scotland, i drink about the same or less than most people here. I have tonnes of drink in the house. beer, wine, good whisky, gin, vodka, absinthe... both mine and other peoples. i'm going out tonight, I've had 3 beers while getting ready and watching the football, if i'd tried to tan as much as I could that we have in the house or going through a bottle of wine knowing i was going out to drink more in a club I'd start worrying about myself. |

Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
What is alcoholism? Alcoholism is also known as "alcohol dependence." It is a disease that includes alcohol craving and continued drinking despite repeated alcohol-related problems, such as losing a job or getting into trouble with the law. Alcoholism includes four symptoms: Craving--A strong need, or compulsion, to drink. Impaired control--The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion. Physical dependence--Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Tolerance--The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel its effects. Why is alcoholism now considered a disease? Alcoholism is now accepted as a disease. It is a chronic and often progressive disease. Like many diseases, it has symptoms that include a strong need to drink despite negative consequences, such as serious job or health problems. Like many diseases, it has a generally predictable course and is influenced by both genetic (inherited) and environmental factors. =============================================== Here is a test, but I find it a bit harsh :? (though it is a common test used by dependency counselors) http://www.aa-uk.org.uk/publications/areyou.htm |
I wound up answering Yes to only one, "Do you drink alone?"
I personally define an alcoholic as one who is dependent on alcohol and their drinking affects their lives one way or another. I drink alone because I do not base my activities on whether or not I have company. That would be co-dependency. I like to have a drink and relax. But I do not need it either and it has never affected any other aspect of my life. I'm not going to go "WOW, I'm an alcoholic because this website says so!" There is a tendency to demonize any activity that is mind altering without taking into consideration whether there is any real negative effect. As far as I'm concerned...ANY activity can overtake a person's life and have a negative effect, even those perceived as healthy activities such as sports. You gotta admit it's amusing that if it it involves anything that feels good, be it alcohol, drugs, sex.... it's a problem unless it's under strict guidelines like "drink only in moderation in the company of others" and "have sex with one partner for the purpose of procreation, in the missionary position with the lights off and the covers over you." |
From the bottom of the Alcoholic Test page:
(These questions were made up by Dr. Robert V. Seliger for use at John Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore, MD, in deciding whether a patient is alcoholic.) Copyright © Recovered Alcoholic Clergy Association, 2000 I'll take that thing with a grain of salt. |

People seem to forget that alcohol is a drug , like any other drug it is poison to your body. Its like whether or not someone is a smoker, if someone smokes only on Saturday nights but says they are not a smoker, then why smoke on Saturday nights. If you are a alcoholic drinker then u r a drinker however often or not it occurs. Dawn |
People seem to forget Water when consumed in great amounts, is toxic to the body.
It's about excess in anything, Period. |
