Question about Cold Hard Heart

I'm not quite sure what this is supposed to mean...

She'd bring me wine and sip her tea
Then you'd give yourself what you could give to me

Who does "she" and "you" refer to?And what does the second lyric mean?

Javier 09-19-2005 02:04 AM

they're pronouns.

Greekfan 09-19-2005 02:10 AM

Pronouns refer to nouns. These nouns is what I'm looking for.

Javier 09-19-2005 02:43 AM

yeah that's right.

I think the lyrics refer to a woman who is obviously very selfish and uses the influence of alcohol (in this case Wine) to help seduce him, while she stays sober sipping her tea.

..

Do you mean that the "she" and the "you" refer to the same person?Wouldn't that be "and then she'd give herself what she could give to me"?

Rob 09-20-2005 01:54 AM

In this case yes, they both refer to the woman. It's not a great piece of writing as the first line is written in the past tense (I.e. something which has already happened), and the second line is written in the present tense (I.e. something that is happening now). Sorry if it sounds like I'm patronising you, it's just I'm not sure how much you understand of the English language. It's a complicated bit of writing. If you were to take that passage to an English teacher they would advice you against writing like that, because it can be confusing, even for us who are well acomplished with English, never mind a Greek who is learning English. Hope that helps. :)

I am an english teacher, and it's not the english language that makes these lyrics puzzling-I'm not asking for the translation of the words.

And what about the second lyric? Is it really about alcohol?

ugly_queen_from_mars 09-22-2005 12:43 AM

it means that she had also food to accompany the booze but she ate it all by herself.
i have a feeling that you've been searching for dirty lyrics.;)
