Looking for a quote about Jon vs Richie's ideas of live shows

Hey there, Can anyone help me out? I have been reading Dry County( LOVE IT it is so much funnier than backstage!) forever but haven't posted in a while. Anyway does anyone know of where I can find the thread about Jon and Richie's views of touring? I looked through the archives but cant seem to find it.

I remember someone posted how the two contaradict themselves Richie says something like If you are on stage having a good show all you think of is the musci crowd, etc. If you are thinking of waht to do after you are an asshole.

Jon says something like When I'm on stage all I do is think of where to go to eat after.

I think the thread might have been called Richie calls Jon an ass or something like that.

I remember thinking it was really funny and i'm looking for the exact quote to show my brother.

Can anyone help me out? thanks

I don't remember reading that but I remember seeing an interview within the past year w/ Jon. The interviewer asked him what he thought about while on stage and his response was that he usually thinks of where he wants to eat or whatever. I distinctly remember him saying that he doesn't think about the show. He said that if he has to think about the show then there is a problem. Sorry I can't be of any further help. I'll try to find that interview on the net again.

Q: What goes on in your mind while you are on stage?

JBJ: If it's a perfect night I'll think about anything but the show. It's an out of body experience that will have me planning the party at the bar or the restaurant we'll go to. If I'm thinking about the show something's going wrong.

30 seconds on Google.

Is it just me, or does backstage have a creepy cultish feeling to it? It's like brainwash wonderland. I'm afraid to go there.

I don't see why that quote makes Jon "an ass." I understand exactly what he means... if things are going well, you can do what you do well and think about other things at the same time. If you have to completely focus on something then there is something going wrong.

Don't other people understand having two distinctly different thoughts going on in your head at the same time? For instance, can't you be at a meeting and paying attention to it and thinking about something else at the same time too? How often do you really focus on ONE thing? I dare say not very often.

Dont think it makes him an 'ass'. But i think there has been lots of discussions about how BJ lately have been very much on autopilot when playing live shows an havent been particulaly spontaneous. This just goes to prove it really. Maybe if Jan was thinking 'how can I make this better' or 'how can i really get the crowd moving without just flashing a smile' rather than what hes going to have for dinner then there would be a little less discussion surrounding poor set lists and the band not being 'up' fro some shows.

I don't know how many shows you've done Becky but at least when I do a show all I think about is how to make thiongs entertaining and what should I do next in order to get people out of their seats. I dopn't think it makes Jon an ass to say that, but it definately makes him a bit boring.
Just my opinion.

Right, I am not saying Jon is an ass. I am just trying to find the two quotes because when you look at Richie's and Jon's quote togethr it is funny to read. I do not think Jon is an ass but it does seem like if you aren't thinking about the show at all then you don't really care. I am not saying he should be thinking/worrying about hitting certain notes etc but i hope he is thinking of connecting with the fans, pushing himself, giving 100%. I am not an idiot i know that some shows he is more up for than others it is obvious in his attitude and it does come across on stage. you can tell right away when you see them live if Jon is in a good mood and if he is goingto make it a great show or just a good show. I feel like sometimes him letting his mind wander to what should i do after etc. makes the show less special and I agree, predictable and boring.

Anyway, nobdy knows the thread i am talking about it was on here last summer maybe or Richie's quote?

Well, Jon has said the SAME thing about performing as long as I've been listening to him talk about shows. I remember he said in the 80's that he might be thinking, "I wonder who's on Letterman tonight?" while doing a show. So it isn't any different for him now than it was 20 years ago so I don't think his mind wandering has any bearing on the quality of the show.
