A 41-year-old was hit in the chest moments after leaving a supermarket in Walkley.
Today Walkley was swarming with police conducting door-to door-enquiries after last night's shooting behind Netto on Orchard Road.
The scene was cordoned off and under police guard with residents unable to move their cars and the postman banned from delivering until scenes of crime officers examined the street.
The victim, from Walkley, was confronted by two young men and shot a number of times in his chest and groin.
He was due to undergo surgery today in the Northern General Hospital, where his condition was this afternoon described as serious but not life threatening.
Today residents in Walkley spoke of their horror at the shooting.
Clive Singleton, 44, said: "It is very worrying to hear about shootings on your doorstep - it makes you wonder what is going to happen next.
"Walkley is renowned as being a nice area - shootings are just not what you expect. There are some parts of the city where you would not be surprised to hear about them, but not here."
A mum-of-two said: "My children are young so I always know where they are but if I had teenagers I would be extremely concerned about this shooting because it happened at tea time when a lot of young people tend to be out on the streets.
"People talk about having armed police officers on the streets but they can't be on every street corner every minute of the day, so I don't see how that would improve things, but something has to be done before the situation gets out of hand."
Another man, whose mum lives in Orchard Road, said: "It is terrible to think that people are carrying guns just a stone's throw away from homes."
Chief Supt Jon House said: "This was a horrific attack and we are currently keeping an open mind about the motive. However, at present this is not believed to be a robbery or a random attack.
"We have many leads to follow and are waiting to speak to the victim in more detail."

Thats bad goose! Did you hear it happen? Guess you wont feel the same about living in your house again! Cant imagine it happening outside my house..wouldnt want too!

Mongoose 11-24-2005 09:09 PM

No I didnt hear a thing and I know what shots actually sound like too so I would have realised straight away, my room is at the back of the house and I was watching Neighbours..Had I been in the front room I probably would have seen it all.

Was quite 'funny' in a way, when we saw the police were doing house to house enquiries we had to dash about moving loads of stuff (old smoke grenades etc hehe)
