What's Wrong With Eye Candy???
Seems to me that lately there are threads about the wrongness of seeing the band as eye candy. Some very rude references to all these women being fat bored housewives dreaming of Jon, salavating over Richie etc....
I say what's wrong with eye candy? First off, no one I know and I have several serious BJ fan buddies, pays $100 a ticket to go look at Jon's butt or his abs, or at Richies chest. Nope first and foremost we all go to hear and see the songs we love played live. That doesn't however stop me from enjoying the scenery while I'm at it!!! Jon is a very good looking man, who works hard on his body and has the results to show for it. Why shouldn't I appreciate it??? Richie has taken up the ole' workout regime it seems, he looks great am I not allowed to think and say so??? What I think is funny is that no one says a word when someone (no Gender here) says thet Jlo has a great ass, Mariah Carey has legs for days, Beyonce is the hottest black chick on the planet, or that pam anderson has great boobs (she should, they have been rebuilt at least three times) or Jessica Simpson looks amazing in her daisy dukes. But let a woman appreciate the BJ guys for their physical appearance, say Jon is hot or Richie is sexy and suddenly you are a bored, fat, undersexed housewife that has the IQ of a throwrug?? Or isn't a true fan??? I just don't get it, I for one am perfectly capable of multitasking: I can check out Richies guitar playing, see how Jons voice is sounding, listen to how tight the band is playing, manage to remember most of the setlist and still very much enjoy Jon's hip swivels, laugh at his so-called dancing, love the pouty face and yes even enjoy the sweat running down Richies very well chisled chest. I say there is nothing wrong with eye candy. FYI- the band enjoys it Jon and Richie were making comments about the quality of their eye candy Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, in Minneapolis, or in Omaha I belive. |
Spot on - all the guys here love their "hot chicks" but if we admire anything whatsoever about the band, except for the music, we are losers. Sounds like a double standard to me.

It is a double standard.

As for nobody you know paying $100 to see a nice ass in tight pants - that is because you probably don't associate with people like that. There are plenty of them out there, though. I know cause I have a friend who spent $75 to see Audislave, a band whose music she has absolute no use for, but she does like staring at Cornells chest :? (she is neither undersexed nor fat, though) |
eye candy = Carmen Electra lol

You're right I don't know anyone that spends that kind of money just to look at someones chest, butt etc.... but I'll take your word for it that they are out there.
I really wasn't trying to put the guys against the girls here, in fact I believe some of the rudest comments i've read come from a woman. ( I could be wrong) I guess what I really want to know is how you make the leap from enjoying the physical assets of a well built man to having to be a bored, undersexed, fat housewife with a low IQ, or somehow not a real fan of the band if you actually admit to enjoying this stuff??? I am a housewife, at least after the 50 hour work week,(surprisingly enough there are no little magic elves that come and clean my house for me while I'm working, making money) That house, by the way thatI bought for myself. Undersexed??? Probably, but I really believe that this is a way to subjective a topic to determine. I'm personally ok with my sex life. Fat??? Umm, no, although I could stand to take that damn Pilates class at the " Y" as soon as I find time to stop working and doing housework. IQ of a throw rug??? well, I can spell (most of the time), can usually manage punctuation, and I can even string a bunch of words together and make a sentence, i guess that disqualifies me from the throw rug group huh??!!! I'm a less than real or true fan??? I don't even begin to know what to say to this. I guess I just find it extremely judgemental, very narrow minded and elitist that anyone. male or female would actual write such drivel, much less believe it. |
I woudn't go as far to say that all female fans like the band because of their looks, because it's not true. However in some people's case (some school girls for instance) it is definately evident. I'm not a huge fan of bra and pantie throwing, and sometimes I think that songs such as TYFLM or AALY encourages things like that. I'm a straight guy but I'm defintely aware that all BJ members are good looking guys. In their business it is a big advantage to be good looking. As well as being able to sing/perform you've to look right on camera. A lot of the new manufactured bands have very little talent at all. However they are all good looking acts that are aimed mainly at kids/teenagers and with a few catchy songs written for them they are very successful. Take Britanny for example. Does she write all her own songs? Nope. Is she a great singer? Hardly. Does she sing live? Hardly ever. Does she look good on camera? Hell yeah! That's why "artists" with no talent can be the biggest stars in the world, because they look good. In Bon Jovi's case, they write their own songs, are an acomplished band and nearly always play live. In that case being good looking has just helped them on their way.

I pretty much agree with what you are saying Rob, I guess it just offends me to see such mass generalizations being made and written with absolute belief and faith that "Jon's female fans" are such and such, when I know it isn't true.
I do understand why the guys get bored if we girls talk about how hot Jon looked or how sexy Richie was when that isn't what appeals to you about the band or the part of the shows you want to hear about, I'd feel the same probably if we were reviewinga female artist and all the comments were about her boobs and butt etc..... but I do understand that it is part of the experience and if someone gets a chance to be up close and personal that it is a big deal to them. It just offends me when someone mass categorizes fans, makes a judgement about who you must be, if you appreciate this etc... |

I know what you mean. Rob and I have even talked about it before--how a women don't get taken seriously if they like music created by handsome men. It's as if the world thinks we're all shallow. But, you know what, I honestly am starting to think it's really a reflection of the person making that judgement call. Maybe THAT person is so shallow that he/she goes to shows for "eyecandy" and therefore generalizes that everyone else does too.
To me, I guess it's a bonus, but it's not why I'm there. I looked up the review I wrote of Omaha because I knew I wrote it spur of the moment, just what I felt and what I heard and what I saw. Not once did I say that Jon's ass looked great or his facial features were finely chiseled. LOL In fact, when I referenced what the girls whom I went with had to say about the show, it was how they appreciated that he really sings his own stuff and sounds good doing it. Even they didn't say a word about anyone's looks, or if they did, it's not what I brought home in my memories. I think tweety just made a great point--don't let what other people assume and what judgements they pass ruin your experience. |
