Music industry versus tablature sites

Well, after hunting down lyric-pages, this is the next step:

I seriously hope that that's a hoax. Otherwise, it's scary.

well in all fairness they're well within their right to pursue....

i found out today that at any one time 20% of the internets bandwidth (or whatever the term is) is illegal music downloads.

think about how huge an amount that is and how much these companies are losing.

Alphavictim 12-10-2005 02:03 PM

But tablatures aren't "illegal music downloads". Who the hell would prefer a simple tab over the actual song?

Mr Bluesman 12-10-2005 02:10 PM

That is ridiculous.

What's wrong with sharing people the way how you play a particular song?

yeah, there no way you can be expected to release a song to millions of people and then say that they cant learn to play it free. thats ridiculous.

I saw Rambo on TV the other day, was gona tie my tie around my head and run about my house with my kid brother with a toy gun, but i guess thats copyrighted too.

No offense, but did you even read the post? This isn't about illegal music downloads, it's about tablature. Tablatures are a way to show in text form how to play something. All tabs are just the transcribers intepretation of the song, not the actual song. If you write a song, you don't have copyright over the tablature. You have copyright over the song, and the lyrics and the music, but tablature is none of those.

All this is hopefully just a hoax, because if it's true, and they come to try and take my site down, I'm gonna sue then. All I'm willing to do is take down the lyrics, but the tabs will stay.

Its not a hoax, iv read about it in the papers and elsewhere online.

heres the BBC article

bollox it does. Im sure the actual artists dont care, or are actually pleased that people wish to learn their work. As long as its properly credited then i dont see a problem.

The arguement could just escalate and escalate..their gona copyright the G,C,D chord sequence or something next, that'd be fun.. they could sue 90% of the musicians in the world with copyright infringement to 'protect' the musical communtity.

no i have read the post ice and it's not too far removed from illegally downloading the music itself.

people want cheap music, they download songs instead of buying the cd's

people want cheap tabs, they go onto tab sites instead of buying the official tab book.

You're wrong.

And that's illegal, because people get the same exact songs from the net, not someone else playing them.

Tab sites offer you interpretations of the songs, on how to play them. They don't provide the songs, they don't provide you access to anything illegal. Is it illegal for me to say YGLABN has a chorus that goes Cm Ab, Bb, Eb? No? Then tablature isn't illegal either.
