They sucked long before this article was written, but to completely copyprotect a disc so that it will only play on a regular CD player is a bit lame. I'm sure not all their fans are crooks. I know it's only so record companies don't lose out on album sales but come on.

Though my mum has that album and she plays it in her car all the time and plays fine.

Thankfully I've never bought a CD that didn't allow me to rip to MP3 or play on a DVD player on my surround sound system.

I wonder how Coldplay feels about their fans getting all these rules set down for them by the music label? I wonder if most fans who read these rules will be wise enough to blame corporate, or whether they'll just decide to dig up a band whose label treats them like customers, not crooks?
1-It seems the band is not to blame for this.
2-I didn't get this list of rules in my copy.
3-My copy plays in all the players I have, from PC to home, from DVD to car.

Wether you like their music or not is another matter.

It's not that it won't play, but they say you CAN NOT play it in anything else or they can sue you. If you use it in a car stereo, you're breaking the agreement. And you can't return the CD, because of the agreement. The tough part is that you only get to see the agreement once you've bought the CD and opened it.

Some people only have 1 system for music and video in their house. A surround sound system will play both music and video and usually plays cds in the DVD player. According to this agreement - you are not allowed to play this cd on a DVD player. That's just wrong.
I think it's going WAY to far to tell me where I can and cannot play a cd that I just paid for. And no cds in the car - that's sick.

Kathleen

tweety_b 01-04-2006 02:10 AM

Right Kathleen.... but it's not Coldplay's fault, I mean it's not them who actually made the cds (I guess)

father_time 01-04-2006 03:42 AM

i dont see why the band are automatically to blame for this....and they probably arent the first anyway.

I really cant imagine Chris Martin having much input, if any, into the legalities of the use of his albums.

For people that are affected by this, you've got grounds for a refund of the cd anyway.

If the artists want, they can affect the copy protections on their CDs.

I wouldn't say this is the reason Coldplay sucks. They do suck, but it has more to do with their crap music than their selfishness.

aserkijn 01-04-2006 04:03 PM

Coldplay is baby music. Just read the lyrics of In My Place... Aaarrrggggghhhhhhhhhhh...

Jim Bon Jovi 01-04-2006 04:15 PM

everyones missing the obvious point that the cd doesn't actually come with that insert.....

i call bullshit.

The only sources for this one seem to be weblogs. Also notice that the square-background and the letters aren't really fitting together: http://craphound.com/images/coldplayinsert.jpg
Also, here the squares are completely gone: http://itch.in/imager/coldplay-xy-leaflet/
And what's "Hindi" apart from the language? If the cd was from India, why would the note be in English?

Other than that, it's very well possible. Good for me I don't care about Coldplay anyway.

My copy didn't have that insert. That's enough for me to say it's not true, at least for Canada but I don't see why they'd change the policy from country to country.

Well, I'm just a bit sceptical because I never recieved that slip. I've managed to rip the CD to Windows Media Player fine, and burn tracks again onto CDR and onto my MP3 player. The CD plays in the car without any problems. It might just be a few batches somewhere else in the world.

It's just on the Indian release. Still, bad enough.

Ice

Mr Bluesman 01-05-2006 11:34 PM

True. But I hardly think the band are to blame.

Jim Bon Jovi 01-06-2006 02:56 AM

why would it just be on the indian release?

Why wouldn't it be? Just because you don't believe it doesn't mean it's not true. See the images of the booklet at http://itch.in/journal/bad-bad-coldplay

They are anything but boring. Though, I do understand why one would say that. You have to get very familiar with their songs and cannot expect any big bang stuff - that is the beauty.

Coldplay is quickly creeping up to be my No.1 favorite band --- to my own surprise!! I have not been listening to anything else for a couple of months now. :S

UKjovi 01-06-2006 05:59 PM

Their not exciting though are they?

I totally agree with you :) I didn't like them at all at the beginning but once you start...it's amazing.

because what would be the point of doing it in one country when the thing is giong to shift millions of units across the world? surely they'd want all their bases covered.

plus that sleeve has absolutely no mention of the fact that it's got anything to do with coldplay.

I find them incredibly exciting :)

Really.

Of course in a different way than Audioslave, but in a more sensitive/tender way :p

For one thing it would be utterly illegal in the US, they could write/demand whatever they want, if it isn't legally enforcable it is a waste of paper.

UKjovi 01-06-2006 07:27 PM

Just me that doesnt get them huh?

They have to start somewhere. And India s a big market.

Didi you even look at the images? It's a Coldplay CD all right. The leaflet doesn't have Coldplay mentioned anywhere because they're probably going to include that leaflet with many other releases as well.

Spunky, you've got it bang on again. First time I listened to Coldplay, yeah, it was alright but nothing special. Went to see them live (this is early days) with a couple of friends. It was good, they were a good act. Nothing spectactular, but just enough to make me want to listen to them again. Gradually those songs draw you in, and you start to 'get them'. Nowadays, seeing them live convinces me that they really are special. You can really tell they've learnt such a lot as a band, and there's a passion there that so many groups post 90s are lacking in. So long as Coldplay carry on doing what they have been doing and progressing as a group, I couldn't give a shit about copyright laws, rules or whatever else the record companies like to complain about.

Very true - I find them boring as hell. And I'm not willing to stick around to wait for my breakthrough moment :)

It is from a song: QOTSA's Broken Box.

Full lyrics:

i've got wine and so do you
mine came with a cork
i wish yours did too

everyone just loves you so
well hurray!
now you know where to go

in my head you're all brand new
i guess you're really all the same
in my head you're all brand new
tell your new boy where i came
in my head you're all brand new
i just didn't want what you gave
in my head you're all brand new
go and find yourself another slave

there you are
ooohh you're so in love, just like juliette
Well guess what?
that's one thing that you can for-****ing-get

tears from the sky
in pools of pain
well baby tonite, i'm gonna go and dance in the rain

in my head you're all brand new
i guess you're really all the same
in my head you're all brand new
tell your new boy where i came
in my head you're all brand new
take that broken pussy elsewhere
in my head you're all brand new
save it baby, i don't care

SamboraQueen21 01-07-2006 12:47 AM

Ugh, definitely no ballad :) But if you're gonna check out QOTSA, don't go by that song - it's not their best.

If we're discussing the new album, yeah. I've just got into Everybody Knows That You Are Insane as well, great song. I'd recommend Songs for the Deaf for anyone wanted to give QOTSA a listening.
