getting a visa?
 

i'm specifically looking at kenya and tanzania but I assume the process is the same the world over.

how exactly does one go about getting a travel visa?

I have no clue whatsoever and no one I've asked seems to. Even my mate who's wanting to move to the US after the summer is lost.

This might help a bit.

I work for the Danish Embassy and we process visas all the time. Your best bet is to contact the Embassys in this country for the countries you plan on travelling to. Be warned though, you may need to apply in person at the Embassy which more often than not is in London. Visas can also take up to 6 weeks to go through the system, so be sure to do it in plenty of time ..

BTW this only stands for what I know of the Danish procedures, Kenya and Tanzania will be totally different. Call their Embassy (or a Consulate local to you) and find out :)

cool. k both seem to be 3 month visas. does that mean I need to apply so that it goes through and my trip will be within the 3 months or could I in effect apply tomorrow if I wanted but say I needed it for 3 months starting later in the year?

How come ur going there??. My cousine who is prest is in tanzania to build schools and lot of other things and he says its one of the poorest country and u have to be bit careful there espeically carrying bags and wearing watch or chain or anything that sort.... So not forget wear jaket and don't carry big bags and all... My cousine is in india now on vaction.... let me know when ur going and where ur going...

You can usually apply any day and let the visa start at some other point. At least - that used to be the case with an Australian working visa. But I suppose it's usually the case when you apply for a visa in you're home country (as opposed to getting a visa on the border of the country you're visiting ;)).

Exactly. The visa will be valid from the day you're going to enter the country, not the day you apply for it. I usually have to get African visas for my boss so if you have a particular question feel free to ask me.

One advice I'll give you is that the Tanzania one usually takes a week - if not more and they are close on Wednesdays so don't leave it until the last minute.

For Kenya, if I am not wrong, you can apply for a visa upon arrival but you'll spend a long time at the airport so it is definitely better to get it here.

cool thanks for all the help it is much appreciated. alot of the websites don't totally clear things up and sometimes you need it in laymans terms to really understand it.

as for why I want to go... it's totally in its infancy just now but since all of my mates are either skint or going away witht heir lady friends in the summer and I have money and no lady friend I want to do something cool so I'm looking into joining a small group trek up mount kilimanjaro.

I've looked at some more companies and one i';ve found includes flights from london to kilimanjaro airport so I wouldn't need to cross the border at kenya thus eliminatign the need for another visa and a certificate for yellow fever vaccination.
