the site won't open properly for me but i was on another board the other day and some guy was goign on about how stupid scientology and mormonism was on account of their alleged stories of how the religion began.

the guys like: it's just mad that anyone would believe this crap about spaceships n everything.

to which someone else replied: you believe some omnipresent being who we can never see hear or prove physically exists created everything in the entire universe, used to flood and plague the earth at will whenhe wa spissed off, sent his son down who healed the sick, turned water into wine and fed 500 men with a fish and loaf of bread before beign publicly executed then rising from the dead 3 days later and is now waiting until the rapture when he can come back and kick some major ass..................

the guy does have a bit of a point. If you don't believe it then christianity, islam, hinduism and just about every religion is as whacked out as scientology and mormonism etc...

I agree to some extent, but you could also consider the fact that 2000 years+ back many more things couldn't be scientifically explained and were more or less automatically attributed to divine intervention. Natural disasters being one of them. It was all much more believable at the time than the new faiths spaceship crap is now.

Then there are the centuries of passing on the myths and legends from one civilization to another, with all the political influences in the interpretations, the lost and deformed information, etc... And today, most believers of the main religions, and even the Vatican when it comes to Christianism, read the holy writings as metaphores, when scientologists take their founding story as facts.
