A Look At Windows Vista

Quite an interesting article regarding the new version of Windows. Pretty different! :D

Bill Gates shows a couple of things about Windows Vista.

sure, but what value does it add? Why should one go out and spend loads of money on vista to replace xp?

I don't know. I'm actually trying to get into Linux, but it's so damn hard!

I guess adding a few stabilisation points wouldn't harm Microsoft that much

Yeah you're right. Linux is hard. It's mainly been designed by programmers for programmers, although they made a user interface for it, which takes some getting used to. The good think about Linux though is that it's really stable and you don't get many shitty errors like you do with Windows. It's also less likely to be targeted by viruses or hackers. It's not something I'd use on a regular basis though.

That's not true. It was so in the early 90s, but Linux is really easy to use nowadays. You just have to pick out the right distro for you. There isn't jsut one Linux there are hundreds of different variants. The ones made for serious geeks will obviously be more difficult than the ones made for normal people.

Just try Linuxes like Ubuntu or Mandrake or Suse. Those are the real easy ones.

You're basically only quoting what you've read somewhere. It's kinda true, but also a very stereotypical look on Linux.

I've installed about a dozen different Linux-distros and I've found a few that work for me. However, the trouble with me is that I need certain software and they're not made for Linux yet. I could use an emulator, but I really don't see the point. But I have a Linux on my laptop, just in case I have to use it for something.

You obviously know more about it than me. I've only briefly used an old version of Linux at college which I struggled to use. I have read up on Unix and Linux, etc, but apart from that my knowledge is limited. Would you use Linux instead of Windows, or is it just something you'd use occasionally?

If I had the same few programs on Linux that I have to use on Windows, then yeah. I have no problems. I like the fact that I can make Linux behave just the way I want to. I can make it look just the way I want to. It doesn't do anything I don't tell it to, it doesn't report to Microsoft everything I do.

But, Linux is difficult to master when you have problems. The Linux communities around the net are bit in-bred and they really don't like newbies, although they claim they do. It's best if you have a "nice guy" to show you the ropes and after that it's just a question of how much time you want to spend on refining your skills.

But yeah, I'd change to Linux if I could get Flash, Dreamweaver and Photoshop on it. Preferably for free. :)
