I don't care what the law says or what many people believe. The stronger species is always the one to survive, naturally. Just because they were brought over by us instead of somehow finding their own way means **** all.

You have no respect for the laws of this country? How rude.

To the fat greek, I'm bored of you already.

I have more respect for the right each creature has to live. Fair enough if someone wants to set up a preservation area and only keep red ones in there to increase the numbers - but short of eradicating every single grey one (which is presumably impossible) if they are more dominant, then eventually they will out-last the red ones anyway.

Mongoose 12-02-2007 03:26 PM

I think the point is you shouldn't have to set up a conservation area, sure the Grey has a right to live, in its own country. It's those bloody yanks again throwing their weight around.

What about a lizard species were brought to this country and started killing us humans because they were more dominant?

They've been here a long time now, and it isn't their fault that someone brought them over. Besides which, they are presumably descended from the same ancestors anyway, back when the land was all a single mass - so it doesn't matter if they've been here 100 years or 10,000,000.

How do you feel about the fact that we have lions, elephants, zebra, giraffes etc here - none of those are originally from here, right? And those are ones in conservation areas here (safari parks, zoos etc)

If such a species existed then they'd have wiped us out before now anyway ;) Any species which is more dominant than another will naturally survive - if this wasn't the case then we'd not be here. If a species isn't strong enough to survive, and can't adapt, then it means nature has selected it for extinction.

They're not out wiping out the indigenous populations so I'm not bothered :]

Obviously the Grey Squirrel problem is just that; a problem. Otherwise the Wildlife Agencies would just take the same view as you and they would not be classed as vermin.

Perhaps in some areas they are literally over-run with them, but surely that can't be the case everywhere. The park near me isn't huge, but there must be a few dozen of them there and people like to feed them, they are very tame. There are no red ones, only grey - so why should grey ones everywhere be classed as vermin and people be expected to kill them?

Mongoose 12-02-2007 04:25 PM

That's because your average joe townie has never seen the beauty of a red squirrel and thinks "ooh look isn't it cute!" when it couldn't be further from the truth.

It's not just the damage they do the reds, its the birds, the trees - especially beech trees which by all accounts nearly "died" back in the 20's!

It's a shame that many people have only ever seen Grey Squirrels and therefore don't really know just how evil they are :E

Thomas Anderson 12-02-2007 04:29 PM

The red ones look more evil - they eve have horns! :p

Mongoose 12-02-2007 04:56 PM

Tufts man tufts!

Here is a picture of a crane. It isn't very good but then neither is my camera apparently - Cybershot DSCW55, one of these days I'll get a SLR - or it just might be me that's crap :(

There's nothing to stop you getting a good photo on a compact camera, it's just about knowing what you're doing. You could get an SLR and end up with shit photos. Having an SLR doesn't make every photo you take instantly amazing, it is just a more sophisticated tool to allow you to capture something as you want it, not just as the camera 'thinks' you might want it.

I started a project on FlickR - Project Advent. There are other such groups on there, but as you might expect they have specific Christmas themes. My idea was to shoot the most random things that I could find, 1 per day, through the period of advent. Here are the first 6 days so far -

Day 01 - Hooked

Day 02 - The Time

Day 03 - 74

Day 04 - Tilted

Thomas Anderson 12-16-2007 07:38 PM

Thanks :) I started with making my cards last year, but only used little handmade stickers that I'd bought. This year I wanted to put more effort in so I started to find some little origami designs and then just use appropriate stickers as little extras. Then for the inside I use my calligraphy pens and have a few nice little layouts. I'm trying to make each card unique, so no two are exactly the same.

Just this afternoon:

From tomorrow on it will be warmer again :(. The last official white Christmas recorded here was in 1981 - I never even lived through one :o. But this was all just frost anyway, no snow!

Kev 12-21-2007 06:14 PM

Beautiful Sara, just beautiful. I wish we had some snow! :(

And it got even better today when we had clear blue skies, temperatures around freezing point... and... the perfect weather for longtrack iceskating! You probably have to be Dutch to truly understand the crazyness around here when there's even a tiny film of ice on the lakes... It's been many years since I last had the possibility to skate (too many warm winters lately), but today was a great opportunity! So after 50 km / 30 miles of skating and lots of photographs... these are some of the results:
Ahhhhh *sigh* :D

Oh Sara - I love the skating pictures. I also love to skate and the warmer winters lately mean that I have to go to an indoor skating rink if I want to ice skate. I can still roller skate (when it's warmer) but I miss skating in the winter on frozen lakes and rivers.

Walked past my old primary school today. It had shut down a few years ago, but wasn't demolished as part of it is listed - but last year they had a fire, so I'm not sure what they'll do now. Sad to see it like this though...
