I've taken star photos before but there's too much light pollution where I love, so I can never usually see so many. In Wales I was about 6 miles from a town, and even then it wasn't a big town, so there was so much to see. I couldn't quite believe it when we got there the first night, unpacking the car and I happened to look up.

Yum - I used to grow 'em too but a local farm always has them these days so I don't grow my own anymore. Do you dry them and keep them for cooking all winter?

The guitar is nice - but those sunset pictures are spectacular.

Thomas Anderson 10-09-2010 08:54 PM

I just happened to glance out of my window and saw how great it looked, and though I did increase the saturation a little, it really did look that nice. And I got the guitar this week, it's only a cheap one, used (but like new) but I like it, it sounds good. I just need to get good with it now (might take a while).

How the hell did you get enough light to shoot that at 1/2000?

Well it was pretty bright, despite being cloudy, and I was shooting at f4 ISO400 intentionally so I could use a fast shutter speed, to make sure I really caught the action.

Kathleen 01-06-2011 11:56 PM

That IS very cool. How long did you have to time it to get that effect. I'm thinking about being outside and freezing while taking pictures LOL.

Thomas Anderson 01-07-2011 12:08 AM

Well I have a remote which lets me time it - that one was actually a stack of 246 shots, each 4sec (+4sec gap) f3.5 ISO3200 - which means it was out there for about 33 minutes. I then layered them in Photoshop, set the blending to 'lighten' and flattened it, then a bit of curve tweaking.

I've left the camera outside taking some more shots now, am experimenting with different settings to see what I get - gone for 15sec f11 ISO6400 each shot this time, with no interval. Means I can take less shots and cover more time. I'm going to give it an hour this time and see how it looks.

Thomas Anderson 01-07-2011 12:13 AM

I also put together a video of some of my timelapse sequences - - there are some daytime ones in there too, but mostly nighttime ones. I uploaded it in 1080P so watch it fullscreen for best effect :D

Jovimimi 01-07-2011 12:55 AM

I loved your timelapse on youtube !

Thomas Anderson 01-07-2011 01:37 AM

Another one, with a little more colour to it...

This would have been even better except that someone had opened the back door, letting warm air out, which then caused the lens to fog. I need to get some silica gel and some sealable bags for next time I do this 'cause the inside of the lens has fogged since I brought it in - and I only got this lens today!

Thomas Anderson 01-07-2011 03:09 AM

...and another video clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v...tQns&vq=hd1080 - that is the first swirling shot I posted tonight, made into a video. It is only 10 seconds but it looks cool because I got the layers to show through, so it builds from a plain star shot, up to the swirling version.

Thomas Anderson 01-08-2011 10:37 PM

I got a new speedlite for my camera, just a cheap one really, but it's far far better than the popup flash on the camera, which I never use. I decided to test it on a willing subject...

For anyone who ever visits Liverpool, if you like chocolate, you need to go to The Chocolate Cellar - they have lots of lovely handmade, fair-trade chocolate and cakes, but the best thing they offer is hot chocolate! You get a mug of steamed milk and a stick with a lump of chocolate on it, which you stir into the drink until it melts. The result is the most delicious, rich, creamy hot chocolate ever! (well, that I've ever had)
