It's a really nice place, shame there weren't as many swans this time.

Well, it's been a while since I - or anyone - shared any photos, so here are some of my best from May up to now :)

Really like "Singled Out" of Thomas'es - as the name suggests, the strongest focus on the subject. V. nice.

There's also a joke there somewhere using the word "cropped". I am tired.

I'm always tempted to take my good camera to a gig, but assume it'd get taken off me - but then I always see people with SLRs and wonder how they got them in!!

If you have any kind of web presence at all, getting infront of the barrier really is just a matter of asking managers and venues, and explaining why you want to be there - sooner or later you'll hit lucky. The worst that can happen is you'll get ignored!

The shots from Villa are with my Canon Powershot, which I can't recommend highly enough - you're limited to the range of the lens it comes with, but it fits in my pocket and produces pictures that look that nice with a minimum of effort.

I've been looking at some of the new compacts with the pancake lenses, not just for gigs but generally to have in my pocket when I don't want to be carrying all my kit with me. I don't mind the effort, I much prefer having manual control, I'd just like to get decent shots at a gig for once! I've only ever lucked out a couple of times at all the gigs I've been to and got the odd good shot.

I took all those on a cheap Lumix, if I do go for a standard compact again I'd probably go for one in that range - the light sensitivity is pretty decent, and they usually have decent quality Leica lenses.

There are several methods (which I'm not going to spell out here but I can pm you) depending on the weather. In cold weather with lots of layers on smuggling in recording gear is easy. And we are fortunate here that we get lots of indoor arena shows during the fall and winter.

During the summer when I'm wearing tank tops and shorts it's a bit more dicey LOL. Then my husband and I usually split up the gear and it still gets in pretty easily. Don't guess that a camera would split up too easily LOL.

Thomas Anderson 06-16-2013 01:03 AM

I've got a recording device which I considered taking last week - but my problem is that I love singing along at gigs, so it'd be no use me trying to record one haha

For cameras though, compacts are generally fine everywhere I've ever been, so I might just go with my idea of getting a decent one anyway, as I'll certainly use it a lot just day to day, not just at gigs.

Very impressive. What technique did you use to take the night shot of the stars?

Thomas Anderson 08-18-2013 09:48 AM

Just a few 30 second exposures, wide aperture and fairly high ISO (hence the noise level). They're only so clear because I was in the countryside with very little light pollution.
