Well this thread disappeared very quickly!
Here's a new addition though - Harlem Rain intro on the new acoustic. Only 30 seconds as I didn't have the time to record the entire track - bloody uni work!! www.putfile.com/rs8mb0r8 |
I think the thread died after the gaz thomas scandal. which is a shame.
nice playing though on harlem rain, did you do it in stanadard tuning because i remember reading somewhere that richie played it open D. i could be mixed up with another song though. |

Yeah, I play it in open D tuning too. It's the easiest song in the world once the tuning has been sorted. No key changes like in 'The Answer' which was a sod to learn!! :)

k you've just convinced me that i'm probably playing it wrong now but i always play the answer in standard tuning and it sounds fine except for the 2nd chord between the verse and chorus which is some weird B..... i shoul dbe getting my drums sorted tomorrow and ready to lay stuff down on sunday. is there anything in particular you want to hear? |
I've always played "The Answer" in standard a well. Odd.
|
Sorry - I didn't mean that I played 'The Answer' in open D too. I meant that I always placed 'Harlem Rain' on a pedastal as though it was a bloody difficult track to learn, harder than 'The Answer' which took me a fair few attempts, but since stumbling upon the correct tuning, most of 'Harlem Rain' is open strings making for nice, easy playing! :)
Jim, if you wanna lay down a rough KTF drumbeat (possibly get your bro to play over the top on guitar or, if it's easier, get a usable midi file and have it just audible in the background so we can hear what your actually drumming over the top) and maybe a wee solo or something on their too. Obviously it's just to give us a general idea so I don't want you slaving away all weekend laying down track after track mate! Something short and representative of the sort of style you'd play for Jovi stuff would be enough to give us an idea! If the guys are happy, we'll then arrange an audition session for you - we now adopt the whole, 'demo first, then audition' even if we have a lot of interest cos we're just fed up of wannabe-drummers applying! ;) My dad always said that drummers are hard to find and, when we started out, we were absolutely inundated with applications which left me feeling that he was talking b*****ks. We all soon learnt that he was, in fact, spot on! Lots of people who think they can drum but actually can't keep a steady beat going or adopt the right tempo which, to be honest, I would consider to be pretty key attributes for anybody who steps behind a kit. Do you have the official tab book for 'Stranger in this Town' btw? If you want me to give you the position of the chord you mean, just give us a shout and I'll list what the book says for you. |
cool ktf was what i was thinking about laying down. was just listening to a few live versions of it 2 minutes ago actually.
ill run a version of it from my ipod through my bro's desk and into the recorder then drum over it because i've just realised he doesnt know half as much bon jovi stuff as i thought he did. just now for the bridge between verse and chorus in the answer i'm playing: A then -0- -2- -2- -2- -2- -0- so it's really A with a B in the bass. it's as close as i've been able to get it but i still dont think its 100% right. as for drummers being useless. i couldn't agree more. i could tell you some stories about drummer's weve went through. when i told my girlfriend i would be laying down a demo for you guys she said: you're always slagging drummers and sayign their idiots so why do you want to be one? to which i replied: i'm a guitarist 1st and foremost so i'm not prone to the drummer gene which makes them all morons :-) |
Yeah, what is it with drummers?!?! - although, saying that, some singers share the same gene too, I'm sure (although thankfully, not ours!!)!
Just send over the mp3 over once you laid it down and we'll have a listen mate. As for 'The Answer', in the pre-chorus where it goes, "Now the years roll on, tired voices have all gone....," the book says: Code:
Pre-chorus 1: |
cool playing a Bm7 definetely works and makes sense now that i think about it. cheers.
|
can anyone tell me where i can get a tab for harlem rain in the correct tuning?
my usual sources have failed me. thanks in advance |
I don't know if one actually exists in the correct tuning but I can play it so I'll have a sit down and see if I can tab it out for you. ;)
|
Just to let you guys know, I got my guitar fixed. It sounds absolutely marvelous, the Texas special pickups are very very nice as is the Dimarzio Paf Pro pickup.
|
thanks RS8, very much appreciated.
You go tnay pics of your guitar thierry? |

that's uncalled for Gaz, but a hell of a guitar. could you imagine using that on stage?

OK, here is the bulk of it. Some fills thrown in here and there that shouldn't be too difficult to work out - I just couldn't be arsed. This is pretty much all you need to get through the whole song from start to finish though. Bound to be some mistakes (most notably right at the beginning) but it sounds close enough to me. Ignore the musical notation though as this is most certainly incorrect - music never was my strongest subject. Play by numbers, that's all you need!!! :)
Remember, open D tuning (dagDAD) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10...arlemRain1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10...arlemRain2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10...arlemRain3.jpg |

thanks for the tab RS8, can't wait to have a pop at it.
hey thierry, don't underestimate staggs, they're quite surprising. one of the best 12 strings i've played was a stagg. |
No problem mate.
I agree with andy_ash Thierry. If it plays well, who cares who made it? I always liked the following quote. I can't remember who it was that said it but it pretty much sums up major brand names anyway: What's the difference between a USA Fender strat and a Mexican Fender strat? Not much. One is made in Mexico by Mexicans and the other is made in California by Mexicans!! :) |
gav where did you whatever it is that let you tab stuff like that?
|
Powertabs mate - if you haven't discovered it yet, I highly recommend you check it out! It's a great little bit of software that even plays the song back to you in a midi format. It's intuitive, well presented and, most importantly, it's FREE!!
You can find it here: http://www.powertabs.net/ It has a massive user library for tonnes of artists and each song gets individually rated by other members so you can suss out the quality before downloading it. How's the drumming demo coming along btw? |
cool ill need to check the out tomorrow gots me a ceilidh to be devasting tonight but it looks pretty good :-)
i'll have the demo done by the start of next week. ive just got round to fixing the pedal cause i've been snowed under with exams but ill hopefully lay it down tomorrow or saturday afternoon, sunday at the very latest. Instead of doing the full track i was going to play the intro fill and 1st verse, chorus then go into the 'break' right before the solo that finishes with jon shouting yeah yeah yeah, the solo, the marching drum part from the live version back into the chorus finish the way tico does live just saves me having to lay down a full 5 minutes and you having to listen to me playing the verses and chorus ad nauseum. if you want the full thing it's fine but ^ arrangemt ive worked on pulls together everything from the live version and just misses out a few verses. |
Nah, that'll be good mate. So long as it's recognisable and in tempo, that's cool. Just to let you know that the guys we've had in before have all struggled with the kick off the bass drum on to the hi-hat which is why we've put that track to you. A couple of guys seemed to manage it well but most made up a similar (but simpler) beat that didn't quite cut it. You'll probably know exactly what I mean though - I'm just naff at explaining in drumming lingo!
How'd you feel your exams have gone so far btw? I've just got my last bit of coursework done that's due before Xmas. Just a class test to do next week and then revision for January exams when we get back after the hols. |
1-----2-----3----4----
h h h h h h h b b b S S S i think i know what you mean. are you talking about where the beat goes kick, snare, kick, snare (at the 3&4 counts?) if it is i've got that down fine and keep working the hi hat where you can have the tendency to not hit the hats along with the snare. i'll record it along with the click so you can hear it being kept tight. as for exams, ive not sat any this term, it's all been coursework. my diet starts in january... |
argh that didn't work out properly but am i talking about the right part?
the snare and bass work in between mother mother and tell you children etc...? |
Yup. As I said, I don't have clue when it comes to the technical terms but since you know the exact part of the song I'm on about, you've probably got it sussed mate from the sounds of it! Lookin' forward to hearing it! :)
Have a good weekend! Managed to get one of the US Sambora necks off of ebay a few days ago so just one more neck and the body to get and it'll be up and running! All hardware and electronics are sitting waiting for installation. Wahey! |
cool you'll need to show me pics of it once you're done.
that really has to be one of the craziest ideas for a project build ive ever heard. you do have a serious GAS problem. :-) |
Hehe! I know, I just always have to have something on the go.
I'm going through a bit of a doubleneck phase at the moment. They've never really appealed to me all that much but since setting out to create this monster, I've had so much fun, I'm already thinking ahead to the next build - possibly a doubleneck tele or something like that. I've been having a look at Manson guitars too who make all of Matt Bellamy's axes with the cool on board wacky effects. Possibly something for the future just for a laugh! :) One of the nice Roland GR-20 or GR-33 guitar synths would cool at some point! |
i was going to chime in and say you should build the double neck tele he uses for HAND live but i'd go for a mason guitar over any of them.
i looked at his website a while ago and drooled over all the different guitars he'd built for bellamy.:-) |
They are pretty awesome!
I was actually just flicking through some websites looking at some nice Sambora signature guitars just now and it would appear that there may be some truth to the ebay auction I snatched up my Sambora neck in a few days ago. The description detailed that it was from a prototype Sambora strat that was due to be given to Richie at a benefit but never got to him. You kinda take such info with a pinch of salt when you buy stuff off ebay and I just bought it as it was one of the sig necks that I need for the project. However, the guy who sold it to me is a John Monteperto who just so happens to have an extensive collection of Richie's guitars that he actually played and a number of prototype instruments built for him as well. Maybe there's some truth to it afterall! Pretty cool if there is!! :) |

Besides, call it a back-up, just in case, I don't know, your board stops working or something - it could happen you know! What's happening about that btw? You heard back from the insurance company? |

Maybe Santa will have enough room for a Fantom in his sleigh!
|
hey gav just to say ive got the drum tracks laid down. ill just have to let my producer/agent/brother get it all onto the untarnut cos i still have no clue how it works from the desk.
i did a shitload of recording tonight actually. sat with a bottle of glenfiddich and rattled out a tonne of tracks. got a tune i wrote the other day almost done, all it really needs is the vocals, bass and maybe another guitar on it depending how it sounds after those two get laid down to finish it. i should really start making a schedule for recording stuff because it's really fun and alot more productive to grab a few beers and play some guitar than fud about here all day or in work. |
