lol smart move

is there any dings??

Ah well. I'm glad my money's going on this doubleneck project as I've been meaning to start it for months anyway.

That guy wouldn't tell me how much he wanted for it either so you were lucky to get an answer out of him. Everytime I asked him what he wanted he said, "make me an offer and I'll consider it." He came across as being a bit of a dick to be honest but I'm glad you managed to get it for $1,700.00 - still a bargain with the $ being so low against the £ at the moment!

Id-yit! Ended up getting less for it than I offered him.

Oh well, I have ordered the first parts of my doubleneck sambora strat project since then - the one he plays on LYHOM on Live From London. I ain't shirking on quality either - if you're gonna do a project like that, you have to do it properly!

Just had two sets of Fender American series tuning heads, a hardtail Fender American Standard bridge and an Original Floyd Rose trem delivered all in glorious gold!!!

The body and scratchplate are gonna be ordered next week but the hardest parts to come by are gonna be the necks by far. Might price up getting them custom made but will probably end up buying two sambora AM series and stripping them for both the electronics and the necks - expensive!!!! :(

****in hell mate that is the coolest sounding project ive ever come across and i don't even really like that doubleneck. i'd go for the same model but with the cherry burst.

i want to know when it's done so i can come over to try it out with your other toys. ill bring my g&l's.

actually im over your way next week for radiohead. will probably be heading straight home but if for some reason i decide to stay for the night we should hit a club or something.

andy_ash 08-17-2006 12:35 PM

I've just started getting some stuff together for another custome build. it's sort of based on richies floyd guitar ( the first white one) but i'm having a les paul style 2 vol and 2 tone set up. just 1 vol pot is stupid, you need the tone pots. and i'm having a sort of les paul/prs style headtsock. but i'm looking out for a cheap floyd discovery so i can use the neck cos they are cool looking. i've already got a set of dimarzio evolutions, a black FR speedloader bridge and all the other hardware. some cool straplocks. they are in the shape of an aztec sun, which is pretty similar to a tattoo that i have on my arm, which i thought would be a cool personal touch. i'm havig it done by the same guy that built y doubleneck acoustic. i'll post pics when i recieve it. probably around nov/dec time i would guess. i also waiting for a rocktron banshee talkbox to be delivered. no more complicated setups for me!

Thierry 08-17-2006 01:46 PM

I have been thinking of building a custom guitar too. But I never bothered because a lot of people say it's too complicated to set it up properly.

Any thoughts?

i agree unless you know what youre doing or have someone there to help

plus when youre constructin it youll need a small workshop style space

and then even if you complete your guitar it might me shit and not work lol

i enquired abut getting a custom made neck with small star inlays for my gold strat. DM guitars quoted me £300, so you might have some look with them. he said he wasn't talking orders again until beggining of august so you should be ok now. i just found them through google.

andy_ash 08-17-2006 04:02 PM

i'd stay away from those kits that you can buy. they are a pain in the arse if you haven't got the proper equipment. many years ago my parents buoght me a les paul one and it was nothing but trouble putting it together. routes and holes that weren't correct size, wood wasn't great quality. it ended up being quite an expensive project.

gazthomas 08-17-2006 06:01 PM

what kits andy????

andy_ash 08-17-2006 07:48 PM

those ones where you can buy the body, neck, hardware, pickups and electrics. all you need to do is spray and put it together. they cost about £200, so buy the time you've bought stuff to prepare the wood and spray it you may aswell have got a les studio or a MIM strat or tele.

oh by the way warmoth do the star inlay necks but they keep adding on fees of you want it routed for a floyd etc.

whitesamborastrat 08-17-2006 10:33 PM

if anyone wants any measurements of a sambora mk2 neck let me know. I would try a few luthiers for a price. But before having a neck made i would have to take one to them that i like so they could copy it.

Andy

whitesamborastrat 08-17-2006 10:35 PM

oh btw rs8, wasnt one of the necks a baritone on that guitar? if not it would be cool to have one you could then play hand on it really well.

Andy

RS8MB0R8 08-17-2006 11:00 PM

I'm just gonna get two six-string necks, one with a Floyd Rose setup and the other with a hardtail setup. Then I can use it for songs such as HAND, LYHOM and Wanted (as I don't have a doubleneck acoustic - yet!)

I'd looked at Warmoth and have asked them about custom necks in the past but the only star inlay necks that they (used to) make are either all mother of pearl without the black border, or all black with no white centres. I might push them to see if they could replicate the necks for a higher price but short if that, I may either strip down two sambora MK1s for the parts or approach Fender Custom Shop for a quote.

I was torn between goin' to see Radiohead or Muse and opted for the latter in the end. I think Radiohead play on the Tuesday don't they? If so, I'll have to pass on the clubbing mate cos I'm gonna be back at home for a few days and only get back on the Thursday for Muse but we will definitely have to meet up sometime for a pint or six.

And I have to say, that is an awesome finish you have on that new guitar of yours! Never seen anything like that before come to think of it.

whitesamborastrat 08-21-2006 12:40 AM

Rs8, just found a great neck supplier:

Kavanagh customs based in manchester

And wood worm guitars based in birmingham.

I have been to woodworms, he makes soem beautiful guitars from scratch.

Do a google im sure you will find them

andy_ash 08-22-2006 05:56 PM

andy_ash 08-22-2006 09:44 PM

I need some advice, any tips on getting a good "clean" sound for recording? at the moment i'm stuck with a fat strat and a single coil version, so would you recommend any other style of guitar? also what effects would you add?

thanks in advance

Jim Bon Jovi 08-23-2006 01:29 PM

strat neck or middle pick-up.

a little reverb and a bit of chorus but very sparringly. drenching it with chorus gives instant crap 80s clean tone. maybe a tiny bit of reverb would work too. mess about with you're high eq too. you don't want it too bassy.

Jim Bon Jovi 08-23-2006 05:16 PM

while we're at it. you might want to look into a boost pedal to make your clean tone "sparkle"

i have a catalin bread sagrano pablano picosso and it's supposed to be a stout boost but when you turn the knob down to 0 and leave it on, it adds a really nice shimmer to your tone especially when it's clean.

single coil bridge position is prob your best bet

chorus - small amount
bit of reverb for depth
small delay for character
high treble and middle, put bass at about 5ish
high presence also

this is the best you will get, plus if you want a bluesy clean just switch to the neck, personally id leave the fat strat for more heavy stuff like gain and leave the single coil for cleans and overdrive, but its all preference

gazthomas 08-23-2006 06:17 PM

keep at it with your voice it aint hard

as for the songwriting i write total shit and i pass it on to duff who mixes it up a bit and makes it sound right, many of my songs are messy ,the lyrics are there just not in a musical way if you catch my drift, but i have to write cos if it wasleft up to the rest of the band there would be songs about getting high and driving fast carsm which is all well and good but it gets borin lol

andy_ash 08-23-2006 09:55 PM

i'm bored so i'll ask a question. what was the last song you learned on guitar?
Mine was counterfeit god by Zakk Wylde.

dry county (solos inc)

i had a race with duff to see who could play it all the way thru 1st, he won it took him a week, took me about 2 months lol

but thats duff for you i dont think ive ever seen him without a guitar

andy_ash 08-23-2006 10:18 PM

ahh i remember those days of never being without a guitar in my hands. Why did women have to come along and get in the way. Have you actually nailed the solo completely now gaz?

yeh totalled it

i needed alot of help with it though, im more of a feel man instead of speed whereas duffs just a shred head so he helped me.

when you first start learnin it its daunting but when you sit there and watch someone play it you (well I) realise its not so hard as long as you keep up with the tempo anyway g2g av to be at the gig in 30 mins lol onli called back for a cable :p

cyas

gazthomas 08-24-2006 04:52 PM

last night was a blast lol

it was all over the place, almost every song in the first set something 'special' happened lol, and i mean somethin special.

for instance during the opener i dropped the mic (durin the yeah yeah bit), dumb ass

J stood on my cable and i lost all sound out of my guitar durin run to you (yes i even put the lead through the strap)

Durin who says i forgot the words so just carried on singin its alright lol ,but recovered by changin the song to rockin all over the world (just)

duff snapped a string durin DC so left me to play the first solo and the interval before the second (but he did look cool walkin back on stage and hammerin the last solo spot on)

on the other hand

got a girls number lol

we found out our new bassist is good live (even though he stood on my lead)

the acoustic set went perfectly

we played 1hr 45, but no requests this time

dry county was spot on when i listen back to it

we actually were allowed to use the on stage lights which was a first

so all in all it wasnt too bad, i suppose you learn by your mistakes but last night kept us allon our toes. was really gutted when i dropped the mic though i suppose it spoiled the opener a bit.

and i think i strained my voice singin last cigarette cos all the back of my throat is raggin

anyays im off cya

Jim Bon Jovi 08-24-2006 04:57 PM
