its alright, seen that vid b4 theres a good video of a guy playin the dry county solo, he does it spot on, id recommend that 1 if you wanna learn it |
great vid andy.
so many nice guitars man. i even think the white one he's been using on the current tour was looking pretty good. although it's totally not my style, that jet black floyd with the 3 humbuckers looked great too and the handbuilt through neck was absolutely gorgeous. gaz you manage tp get any acoustic recordings or dry county put up yet? |
the vid also answer a question that was put up a while back on another thread, about the white one and what it said on the headstock, if you didnn;t catch it, it says sambora (which is what i thought). i really like the black one. never been keen on the neck thru thing.
i spoke to my luthier friend today and he's started on my new project. he's using an ash body with a maple neck with rosewood or ebony fretboard. just waiting on UPS to deliver me the other dimarzio then everything just needs putting together. can't wait. i've asked for the pickups to be split aswell. never had this done before, anyone here ever played something with split pickups? |

it's not hard at all, i have made several guitars up out of bit's and pieces from ebay. but i don't have the equipment to cut and route a body and a neck (it's having a new speeloader on it, so the replacement necks you can buy don't really help me, and all the strat shape bodies i find are no good because the cavity for the pots is on the back and i'm not having a pickguard so the "swimming pool" routes are no good for me either.
|
cool sounding guitar you've got going there andy. any pics of your other ones?
whats the guitar going to be like? much do you're mates guitars run roughly? |
well it's based roughly on richie's white floyd rose guitar (same transparent finish) with steve vai evolution pickups and a black spedloader. i did want a similar headtsock to the FR but obviously you have to be careful with copyrights and stuff so i've gone for something similar to a les paul crossed with an ovation. it's costing me £400, that's getting me a body and neck from scratch, a paint job and labour, not bad i don't think. he does various styles aswell, semi acoustics, full on shred machines, my double neck acoustic. and your obvious les paul and strat copies.
|
nice man does he have a site?
my bro's been talking bout building / having a guitar made for him cause he's getting jealous of my G&L's :-) btw what are those black pickups on his black guitar in that vid aren't emg's surely?...... |
|
from what i could see they are the stock floyd rose pickups. this guys site is www.wyreriverguitars.co.uk, it's a real basic site but it's got his contact details on it.
can i ask you guys a question? what other sort of headstock shape would look good on the end of richie's white FR? ya see i'm having second thoughts about the les paul style, i'm thinking maybe a prs style? would love the Fr style but don't wanna get sued! |
i doubt you'd get sued for it to be honest unless you put the floyd rose name on it but if it's reallyb othering you i'd go for a PRS or some other similar "pointy" headstock rather than a classic shape like a les paul if it's going to be a shreddy looking guitar.
|
just had a look at my friends site and it doesn't have a contact number and i know he's having trouble with his computer so your best bet would be to get his details from yell.com just type in wyre river guitars in blackpool and your bro will be sorted. he got a good review in total guitar a few years back.

cool thats decent prices for the neck and body. ill tell my bro he's been going on about getting someone to build him a sambora cherry burst strat and that seems pretty reasonable for the body and neck. |
i was wondering how far i could go before it became a lawsuit copy. cos gibson managed to sue prs for a lookalike guitar, but in my opinion that was a load of bollocks, because if you're gonna be spending over a grand on a guitar you're gonna know the difference between the two aren't ya.
|
yeah but if you're not passing it off as a prs or floyd guitar then it shouldnt be a problem. most guitarists wouldnt even look at it and know it was copied from a FR design like they would a fender or gibson headstock.
the prs gibson thing was more to do with something stupid like the knob placement and configuration infringing on a gibson copyright or something as opposed to any aesthetic thing. |
how daft is that hey, probably came about because at the time prs were actually making great guitars and kicking gibson ass cos they had let there standards slip. i shall have a word with my friend and see about the headstock. i see your point though. thanks

10 bits of gear
my G&l legacy my g&l asat my keeley modded boss blues driver marshall plexi fender twin 59 les paul roland td20 v drums 52 telecaster rickenbacker 330 some sort of martin acoustic. that was actually harder than i'd thought. i could really live with nothing but a guitar and amp which makes me question why my pedalboard is so bloated and expensive. |

i'd go for:
1.1958 Strat 2.1962 strat (olympic white) 3.sambora strat MK1(any colour) 4.sambora strat (aztec gold) 5.Les paul Standard (wine red or lightburst) 6.Les Paul Double cut (gold top) 7.Gibson Flying V (cherry Red) 8.Gibson SG Custom (white) 9.Whale blue Hardtail PRS (not SE version) 10.Richies Taylor double neck Well that's my list, i still had loadsa stuff in mind too. didn't even get to think about amps and fx. Just think how much it would cost to buy just these 3 lists. why do we he to have such an expensive hobby hey? i hear stamp collecting is fun and would be much cheaper! |

i've got 4 and only ever play two (and even then thats only when number 2 is closer to number 1) i seriously doubt i'll buy another guitar
|
i've cut down on them over the past couple of years, at one point i had 10 or 11 now i'm down to 5. but will be 6 when my projects done.
|
if i ever have a 6th guitar it'll either be a mk1 sambora strat or a project guitar. there's really no guitar i could buy off the shelf that i reckon could be better than my ASAT

lol you shouldnt have said that. the only mass manufactured guitar id pick up would be another g&l. maybe a fat legacy or a classic asat. k maybe the odds of me picking up another guitar are slightly higher than i first admitted :-) how much of that stuff do you actually play regularly? thats ALOT of gear. |

I usually play through most of the effects, the danelectro talkbox and digitech talker are boxed up. Because i converted my loft i have a whole room for my guitars. All of them are wall hung. The pedals are wired up then to an amp switcher to select 1 of any 3 amps or all 3. I tend to go through phases as to what i play at the moment its my aztec gold sambora (cant put it down) nut next week who knows. You would be suprised as i play most of them. When they were in my room at home it was a pain to get them from the case and set the amps up etc. but when they are all ready to rock you can take your pick, excuse the pun. also forget to mention i also have a thd hotplate to keep the neighbours happy. If you ever come to birmingham youre welcome to come and have a play. Andy |
sounds like a great set up.
i dream of having a room when i get my own house where ive got a set up like that. all my guitars within easy reach, my pedal board rigged up to a few amps, my v drums set up and a small PA so i could have jam parties n stuff with all my recording gear set up so i could be bothered to do it alot more. i'm not sure the future mrs Jim Bon Jovi (if she even exists) would be so into the idea though :'-( |

I also built a guitar service bench for string changes and set ups. My next purhcase is a projector and screen for up there. its not quite finnished yet but when its painted and carpeted i will get some shots up. I was also considering buying a neon fender dealer sign off ebay but the guy wouldnt budge on the £100 asking price Andy |
Andy are you rich lol??
i mean i can buy guitars most of the time but thats money from gigs and work, are you a session musician or somethin?? my house aint big enough for most of my gear so its all at the drummers safely tucked away. i just keep my GT, jackson an GT8 with my roland cube 60 practice amp here at home and my epi LP standard at duffs. most of the time i dont use all of my gear i could sell half of it but id rather keep it just incase and to show off of course lol |
