ORIGINAL version of Runaway?
 

Just been re-reading "The Complete Guide to the Music of Bon Jovi" MalcolmDome/Mick Wall, actually a decent overview of their discography (only runs up to These Days).

Does anyone know where i can hear the original recording of Runaway? i.e. with the first radio release lineup, under the moniker of "The Wild Ones".

Is that not just the version that's on the album? The one that's recorded with Hugh et al? Or is there another version?

I think that IS the version that made the Bon Jovi album. The only other version I know of Runaway is on the Power Station Sessions album which is just instrumental.

(and it does sound like one :))
there are also 4 files of the same recording- seemd to be split to tracks (vocal; background etc)
I don't know for a fact if it's the 'Hugh recording' but I thing it might be

'Runaway' was the very first song to gain BJ any attention. It was entered for a contest being organised by Long Island Radio Station WAPP, on the instigation of Power Station employee Ray Willhard, and even ended up being used on a local compilation called 'rock to Riches', designed to showcase local talent deserving of a wider audience. And of course, this version had a vastly different lineup to the one that recorded the album rendition. Indeed, the bandweren't even called Bon Jovi at the time, going under the early moniker of The Wild Ones.

It is interesting to compare the two versions.

ok the important bit....

The original, if anything, is more breathless, more naive and has more charisma. Here was a band reaching out more in hope than anticipation. The 'Bon Jovi' version is far more studied , a little slower and perhaps less enjoyable. This is probably due to production impositions, rather than any deliberate change in the bnad's outlook, although one has to bear in mind that the two versions were recorded by different bands.

I have the book and that's not the only error in it.

There's only one version of Runaway. It's the one on the Bon Jovi album. Read the credits, it's recorded by "The All Star Review" on June 1982. The Review inculdes Tim Pierce (guitar), Roy Bittan (keyboards), Frankie La Rocka (drums), Huey (Hugh) McDonald (bass), David Grahamme & Mick Seeley (backing vocals) and of course Jon on vocals / backing vocals.

So, the solo is played by Tim Pierce and the keyboards by Roy Bittan. Shocked? You should read the album covers.

the authors clearly states there being 2 recordings: the one on the album being the non-BJ version, so where's the other? Does anyone know of a Bon Jovi studio recording of it?!

Im assuming they wouldnt have wrote about two versions if they hadnt actually heard two....and why would they make it up?
