Always from Philadelphia '10:
https://youtu.be/ZAz5pxmgYWA Not a single bum note. It's still incredible - at least for me - that around '10 Jon managed to get his voice back to the Crush/early OWN tour level after having sounded like shit for several years prior to that. (Even the European leg of the LH tour, while definitely great, wasn't quite as consistent vocal-wise as the 2010-11 tour.) He got most of his high head voice register back, and I'm sure he could have even screamed easily again if only he had tried. He started to slip a bit in '11, but in general his voice was still excellent throughout the GH tour as well. And man... again, just take a look at this version of Something To Believe In: https://youtu.be/67ySaGogCK0 Even after all these years, if I closed my eyes and just listened to the sheer power and clarity of Jon's voice there, I'd be seriously hard-pressed to believe that the rendition is from the 21st century, let alone it being from as late as 2010. He's nailing all those high A's and B's perfectly, even bursting out some '95-esque rasp here and there. It's amazing how good he was sounding back then - and to think it wasn't even that long ago... :(:(:(:(:( PS. Has anyone here ever heard Jon nail the high "Ain't nobody left but us these days..." better on any post-Bremen '00 version than he did here? He even brought up the rasp again on the last part! Un-f***ing-believable... https://youtu.be/q9RPebGaVyM |

Since the video you posted was an audience one, thought I'd share the SBD version of the same performance. Great performance indeed! I was in awe when listening to the live broadcast at the time. There's been quite a few strong versions of Always in that era, but I don't think there was one where the chorus felt this effortless to Jon since the 90s as it does here. Probably because this was a part of a brief afternoon show, rather than song no. 25 or so on the 2,5 hour set, which is when Always usually gets played. |

From Japan 1994. Sounds so good - Richie and Jon are on the money. |

https://youtu.be/h11Gz6M8nRs Compared to the way he sounded in July (what he REALLY sounded like on Always at MetLife '13 - sounds like a bad JBJ impersonator): https://youtu.be/TOgw9q7kUj0 In September (one of the better versions from the second half of the tour, but the vocal decline is still obvious - sounds pretty much like a pig being slaughtered): https://youtu.be/JLlIRVsKXqw In November (sounds like my karaoke performance of this song from last June): https://youtu.be/14wUqsEQX4s In December (sounds like a cat being strangled, or alternatively, a goat having an orgasm - looks like Chris Jericho having a heart attack): https://youtu.be/bfG5EsfAJ2c In March '17 (sounds like my grandpa singing in the shower - looks like Bill Clinton having a seizure): https://youtu.be/p7mJgDKR6PQ In April '17 (sounds like me having a throat infection - looks like Bill Clinton having a nasty migraine attack): https://youtu.be/LrRyzZ_paEs |

I have a strange urge to listen to animals now!
Thanks for that post! |
I feel his pitch was better on the 2017 Always actually?

It's mostly a stress/Richie-based situation, I think. But it also looks like his '08-'11 singing technique was extremely taxing for him, as his voice had declined quite a bit already in '12/early '13, when Richie was still in the band. |
