That quote has gotta be pre 2000. Feel like the lead off single has been the first track too often lately.

True and I don't like it. Opening the album is not the same as catching radio/video attention, which is what the single is for; thus, I always prefer it to be different songs. Exceptions to the 'rule' post-2000 are Bounce (Undivided) and Lost Highway (title track).

Nah not for me. The part you mentioned is probably the weakest part of that performance but he sounds 10x better on that than he does now.

I could genuinely watch that performance all day. The crowd are completely silent. The band are on form. The harmonies are amazing and Jon genuinely looked like he enjoyed performing it.

Why he doesn't attempt that sort of song now, I don't know.

Yup. While the instrumental part was lacking (obviously, due to it being performed on the spot, unlike Lisbon the following year), that was still a very good performance both vocally and emotionally.

I also agree that he should attempt to do it now. One of the very few gems that could still sound OK-ish with his current voice.

He also talked about how he picks singles/songs in a record:
"A single is usually the track that sticks it's spoiled head up and says, Me, pick me!" "Ultimately a group of people from radio, the record company, friends, fans, family, etc. Then that opinion is mixed in with your own personal feelings on the songs."

Always loved this performance! Some real aggression vocals from Jon at some points during that performance.

What I'd give to hear that again.

"It's tough but I try to look at it like a movie or a book. The final songs need a beginning, a middle and an end."
"Thanks for still being there."

Yeah bar Munich 2008 (which was a little flat), pretty much all the performances of Hey God between 2008 and 2011 were quite good :)

Munich wasn't flat at all - just a bit out of breath at times. Hard Rock Calling was pretty rough (for Jon's 2008-11 standards).

Yeah when rewatching it, it was better than I had remembered it. But it's been a decade now since that concert so my memory may have been clouded.
Maybe it was due to Richie's guitar being pretty low in the mix at this show that it didn't wow me like I had hoped before. But vocally it was decent which surprises my in hindsight since he had really started to struggle after Always at this show.
