On a different note: every time I hear a performance like this one, I just feel like punching Jon in the face for picking up his stupid smoking habit in the first place. |

It was on the late night Leno show and it was aired sometime in January of 1995. |

I think the song has WAAAY more power in its original key rather than the one they play it live.

just a test fro my HD camera, Intro for Hey God, Something to believe in and Sweet child o mine solo. not the best performance but i was only testing.

Very good vocals indeed. Just feels very weird when you get to the bit where the solo is supposed to be and its not there... |

Alhough Jon had a great voice back then, it wasn't natural. After watching him struggle, you can see why his voice is where it is now 15+ years later. Smoking may be a factor but not the main cause. Most rock stars lose it later on b/c most aren't natural singers. Compared to others, we actually have it good with Jons voice. I saw Whitesnake last week..... Forget it..... All I was thinking was, thank goodness for Jons voice. |

But the obvious one is Steven Tyler who's voice is more natural and he def still has it. But age is a main factor in itself. The example I always give to people is, if your talking to someone on the phone, you can generally tell what age group they are in based on their voice. That's obviously because voices change with age. Jon at 50 is not going to sound like Jon at 33 when he sings Always. He is a trained singing who had an amazing tone in his youth. He lost that tone and struggles more. I don't blame Jon for his voice issue, I blame him for writing these simple songs around his voice. He should go back to writing great music, belt them out in the studio, then worry about how he's going to perform them live later. I'd rather get a great album with a so/so tour vocally, then him being able to sing simple new songs. |
Very nice Lie To Me. High quality stuff.

Secondly, why would anyone record and release a song knowing perfectly well they won't be able to do it justice in a live environment? So Bon Jovi write, record and release a bunch of kickass songs with very demanding, killer vocals. People like it and buy tickets to a live show whishing to hear those song live. The band perform the songs, but thousands of people are majorly disappointed because Jon cannot possibly do the songs any justice vocally. Disappointed customers aren't exactly very likely to come back and buy tickets for the next show or tour, are they? How can you blame Jon for not deliberately shooting himself in the foot? |
^^If they were being brutally honest with themselves then Richie and Jon should share lead vocals 50-50, both live and in studio. He could sing the ones that Jon can't do justice to. IMO it does not diminish Jon's importance because he is still the leader of the band and has a huge role in songwriting, and he will be playing guitar and backing vocals when not singing.
I know this will never happen but for a long time now I have been thinking it would be a good arrangement. |

When people aren't expecting the stupidities he did in the 80s (again, for worst offenders I'll refer to the falsetto that would come screamed out at the end of many old BJ songs), they may notice he has more nuance in many ways now than he ever did before. There are songs he can't reach yes, and there are songs that he sounds like he could give a **** if he ever sang again (LOAP for one, on those kinds of stuff he tends to sound like a 'cat in heat'). But what's left is far from 'simple'. Now about writing simple songs, that's another matter. Quote:

Do you mean he is a backing singer or that he over cooks his singing? |

Video Description and Uploaders Story: Jam session with JBJ and some fans at the End-Of-Tour-Private Party that the Band had in Lisbon, the day before the last show of the tour. This event was to celebrate the end of the "The Circle 2010-2011 world tour" (a massive 18 months long tour!) and was attended by the entire crew and band; special commemorative Slippery When Wet necklaces and medals have been given to the crew during the event. Some fans (each one from a different European country) and a few brave Italians have been invited as well. The guys from Italy have been invited because of the massive choreography that most Italian Fan Club organized in Udine, on July 17 (check out some of my videos of it). We've been lucky enough to represent Italian fans to this special event! Max, man in charge of the entire choreography, President of BJCI (Bon Jovi Club Italy) and great friend, this one is for you! The party was held in a theatre in Lisbon and lasted all night long with dinner, lotta drinks and live music with Bobby Bandiera, Hugh McDonalds and some other musicians. As far as I remember that's the story behind this video: ...I was having a drink with Kurt, JB's guitar tech, when I heard "Max, Luca, Italian friends...come up on stage!" Jon Bon Jovi was on stage, with Bobby, Hugh and Obie O'Brien (on the drums) and was calling some fans to sing "Gloria". I left Kurt and jumped on stage, off course! We were 5 or 6, I guess, but as the song went on, everybody was on stage! I was actually the only one with a microphone close to me (Hugh's one) and started singing backing vocals to JB and Bobby, just like I do with as guitar player in my Bon Jovi Tribute Band (by the way: check us on You Tube and Facebook: Sex Sells Bon Jovi Tribute) As a proof of that (especially for my keyboard player that believes I'm not a good singer!)...I included subtitles of my short chat with JBJ! Make sure to turn them on on the video |
wow Kev great video, what a privilege.
