get to know him (dont stalk thoug)
find out the things you have in common

these may take a while but then

start hanging around with him
ask him to go out with your friends
ask him out alone
and then you know

Please Lizz - it's the 21st century - why wouldn't you make the first move. If you want something - fight for it - don't just sit back and assume he'll go back to his ex. For one thing you only heard secondhand that his ex is e-mailing him. For another - you can give him something to think about even if he is considering going back to the ex.

Why sit around and hope that he will sort everything out. If you want something sorted out - make the first move. That doesn't mean you might not get your ego stomped on but those are the risks in life. Some of them are worth taking rather than sitting around and being passive.

Wouldn't you regret letting the whole thing rest rather then stating your feelings?

Not that I am one to give advice on dating and opposite sex and such, but I am with Kathleen: stop waiting and playing guessing games and go for what you want. Make the first step. See what shakes up. You are in control of your world. You may not be in control of his feelings, but you will never have to second guess yourself about what could have been......
