Just wondering....

Hi, I like some BJ songs.......admit they have something going on but for the life of me can't understand how people can list them as their absolute favorite in the world. No offense to any of these performers...

But Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, etc. are all bands that deliver the same kind of rock/pop fluff talking about the same stuff everyone's sang about already for years.

Why not check out Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium or Mars Volta, Tool if you want good NEW rock. I am not dissing Bon Jovi or their fans--I have a few CD's and they're fine just wanted to say there's a whole plethera of awesome music out there that hard-core Bon Jovi fans are missing out on.

Peace!!!!

I couldn't agree more. Being a hardcore fan, as in "fanatic", you will miss out on other great artists. But a lot of people here listen to more stuff than you'd think and in the end it's all a matter of personal taste and personality.

RHCP or Tool aren't exactly "new" bands either... and imo The Mars Volta are way overated.

Please don't mention RHCP in the same breath as Tool. They are the ultimate style over substance band who keep releasing the same 2 songs over and over again. I accept your point about Bon Jovi although they are a far better band than either Aerosmith or certainly the dumbass Motley Crue. Bon Jovi are not great innovators nor will their music change the world but they are the first band I really got obsessed with when I was about 10 and for whatever reason they have remained my favourite band. There's no rhyme or reason to it and their output since 1995 has been mostly mediocre but they'll always be my favourite band.

Tool are truly awesome, an incredible band and while I own all 3 Mars Volta albums I'm still struggling with them a bit. People buy RHCP for the fashion though, for the clothes and the look, don't try and tell me they're a great band. They just aren't!

Actually

Actually RHCP do keep evolving even though they've been around for a long time. I adore Richie Sambora--but John Frusciante blows him away in his sleep. Have you been to a Red Hot concert and seen him play? In fairness I did see BJ this year and they were good but I've always felt Richie cut his solos too short (which are my favorite part of hearing a song) and when you go see a band--you want to hear the songs with a twist. Otherwise you can stay home and listen to the CD.

If you listened to Stadium Arcadium, there's no way you could say it was the same old thing or lacking substance. Each song sounds different and AK's vocal style is different. He can sound completely different in each song. I think the people that say that don't understand the lyrics and get bored and move on. It can be difficult to hear about planets and supernovas after listening to love songs...

As for Mars, they are very good musicians. Maybe it wasn't the best trio to mention together but there's many others I could mention.

Again, no offense. Bon Jovi is everyone's dirty little secret!

After loving their first albums I though they were going on a slope that would get me to have the same opinion as you, but their last double album is truely great musically and diverse, you should really give it a try. Recently I saw them live on a great French tv music show (Taratata for those who know it, rated by many musicians as the best live music show in the world :) ) and they were very, very good, much to my surprise.
Sure they're into looks and fashion... just like Bon Jovi owe a large part of their commercial success to being pretty posers.

I agree with first & last 2 posters. RHCP are much more diverse than BJ, and while AK can't beat JBJ (on a good day) live, Frusciante blows Sambora away live...
About studio-albums

Mojo plan/Freaky style
Blood sugar sex magik (forget about OHM)
Californication
By the way
Stadium Arcadium

NJ/ Slippery
Keep the faith
These days
Crush / Bounce
Have a nice day

The first lot are much more diverse than the latter lot.. so IMO I agree here
Talking term of favourites IMO, Stadium Arcadium is anything better than BJ released since 2000. They are in their 40-ies also, had a thougher life than BJ but proved that they still can do it...
If Californication would've been properly mixed & mastered and therefore had a proper quality it would've been right there with TD (all imo)..

I wasn't trying to say Bon Jovi are diverse, that's obviously not the case! What I was saying was that if you're going to say Bon Jovi are not a special band and are just a bit of fluff then you don't offer up RHCP as an alternative because that is all they are. Admittedly I do not have an extensive range of their material but from the outside looking in they appear to have 2 songs. A funk rock song a la Give It Away and a slow, nice, summery song like Californication. They just keep releasing different variations of those songs. Maybe there's loads of really intelligent interesting experimental album tracks that I don't get to hear but I've never had the inclination. I just find them really boring and whenever I see live footage of them AK sings like shit.

Never seen Frusciante live but I doubt he'll ever blow Sambora away, I've seen Sambora solo live when solos aren't cut short and he was incredible. There's probably better technicians out there but Sambora has that combination of technique, melody and feeling that I've never heard Frusciante display. From what I've heard his solo's sound a bit of a mess although they may be innovative and technically astounding, I don't know, I'm not a musician!

TheseDays2005 10-25-2006 11:34 PM

me neither, its a matter of opinions i guess...

Do you actually know any other Bon Jovi songs apart from Prayer, Bad Name, Wanted, IML etc??? Some of my fave Bon Jovi tracks are those which havnt even been released along with the classic ballads such as Always, IBTFY, Bed of Roses etc. I know loads of people, many non BJ fans, who say Always is one of their fave songs.

Also I dont get why Bon Jovi are mentioned in the same breath as Motley Crue, apart from coming out at around the same era they have absolutely nothing else in common.
