Anybody Have A BIG Personal Goal?

I've actually been thinking about this for awhile and it may sound extremely crazy, but I really have the ambition to make a trip to Nepal to climb Mt. Everest. I understand the risks of this goal and I know the threat of my life being taken as a possibility. I'm not at all in the shape I need to be in to climb nor do I plan on doing it for years and years to come. I'm only 20. It's just one of those things that I want to accomplish in my life. The costs vary from anywhere between $30,000 and $70,000 depending on the type of expedition you take. On top of that, those prices do not include airfare, food, or any hotel arrangements that aren't apart of the specific package. I'd like to start taking climbing classes and training classes that will help prepare for the trek. Believe it or not, many people (like me) haven't had the training or haven't had the years of experience and have actually summited the mountain. This is a big personal dream really, it's not a joke. I just don't know where to start as far as training and raising the money. Am I crazy to even think about doing this? Or does someone have a big personal goal/dream like this? Would appreciate any feedback.

...Ryan..I think that's brilliant...Yes I'd heard non climbers sumit. I read a book about it last year...I'll try and remember what it was called...True story and one of them died on the way back down.

It's a multitude of things that will get you to the top. Of course it's physically demanding but you've got mental indurance, altitide sickness and plenty other things to contend with as well...but the thing that will get you to the top is luck.

I once spoke to a guy that had sumitted Everest (Doug Scott)..I was in awe of him...it was amazing to think he'd been stood at the top!....

I could sure help you with the poker if you ever visit New Jersey :)

I have actually acomplished some of my big personal goals. When I was a kid (from a family with no money) I dreamed of designing building and bridges - and was told that a female could never do such a thing. I am pleased to have proven them all wrong :)

On top of that I wanted to have it all - husband, kids, own home etc. So far I've managed to juggle them all to my pleasant surprise.

So based on my experience - go for it Ryan. You don't want to have regrets later in life. Better that you try and fail than don't try at all.

my dream is to go to the states and get a postgraduate master of science. some people i've talked to said that there are real good scholarships. i hope so... i wanna go there and see if you guys are really as insane as i think! i wanna go to a country festival somewhere in texas, i wanna see some nfl football games, i wanna go to hollywood and date kirsten dunst- to sum it up: i wanna go there and see what this country is all about, have a nice time, enjoy a great curriculum and meet some cool ppl. and after about 3 years i go back and start the beginning of the end of my life --> start working

My big goal is to become a published (and read) author. Secondary to that is to get into state government, and from there maybe take a look at being a Representative.

I think the two are mutually exclusive. If I become an author, nobody will have me in government. If I go into public service, then I can't write because I'd never get re-elected.

I don't really think that's true. If an actor/bodybuilder (Schwarzenegger) and a pro wrestler (Jesse Ventura) can be elected Governor, surely an author could make it as a Representative. :D
