Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. It is often regarded as an integral concept in modern liberal democracies. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, although implementation remains lacking in many countries. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

Are you Abu Hamza in disguise?

I bet you've been inciting racial hatred, soliciting mass murder and encouraging terrorism... or were you really naughty and call someone a name?

Thomas Anderson 06-13-2007 09:47 PM

Freedom of speech applies in public and not on a privately owned message board, where the owner decides what they want and what they don't.

Where's the law for this? Thats like saying someone can murder somebody, as long as they are in their own house.

freedom of speech applies wherever. Denying it is a violation of a person's human rights. Moderation on the other hand is fair, if it is undertaken in relation to policy or Terms and Conditions.

I think that is an extreme. I don't think there are so many laws regarding the Internet like that, but if Peter set rules on this board as to what is allowed then if he doesn't like it he can remove it.

So if a person starts a thread 'I hate black people' it's ok then, because it's free speech?

its an opinion which is to be respected, everyone has a freedom to love and hate who they want and they have a freedom to express these opinions, its your persoanl opinion if you disagree, so if you say you disagree then why should you be allowed to express that when thats al the other person has done...

(Don't)Lie_to_me 06-13-2007 10:10 PM

Racism is a crime.

As I said though this is a privately owned board, and as such the owner can dictate what they do or do not want on their board, which is why the mods presumably deleted a thread of yours in which you were posting opinions which Peter has told them not to allow.

the owner can of course do anything he wants.Whether he is right or wrong is a different matter :)

Who is to decide what is right or wrong?

(Don't)Lie_to_me 06-13-2007 10:17 PM

Governments apparantly. Or the country with the biggest guns :)

Thomas Anderson 06-13-2007 10:20 PM

I think it can be worth pushing the boundaries on issues. If no-one ever challenged authority we'd never really get anywhere.

That said, on a board like this it truly is just up to whoever owns it to say what is allowed. If you don't like it, you don't have to post.

Yet you replied anyway, so the topic hasn't ended :p

I've said it before, but ..... the concept of freedom of speech doesn't give you the right to infringe on other people's personal freedoms

Kathleen 06-14-2007 12:38 AM

Must have been a hell of an original post that got deleted to require two threads on freedom of speech.

And most Americans defend freedom of speech - it's only our government that restricts it :(

Kathleen
