lol, well, I suppose there might be some kind of movies in his links.

Thomas Anderson 07-27-2007 05:46 PM

I've got no idea but they do seem to be targettting it lately, sometimes I hit them immediately so no-one sees them, but I've been out today so didn't check 'til I just got back to find 3 new threads. There must be something in the description of the forum or perhaps an existing thread that is making them target it (given that it's all automated crap)

I missed something about boobs???

Iceman 07-27-2007 07:03 PM

It's a bot, it's not a human. They don't care where they post. They jsut choose a random forum and post spam there.

Ice

UKjovi 07-27-2007 07:18 PM

but how does that work? surely someone has got to type the stuff in?

It's been somehow targetting the film forum though Ice - there's been 11 threads I've had to trash in the past 28 hours! lol

Nope. It's a computer program that sends random posts to any forum that isn't properly protected. They insert links in the hope that someone will click it and in the worst case get a computer full of viruses.

Have you thought anymore about going with the Sky package Dawn?

Becky 07-31-2007 04:04 AM

I just removed 14 threads from the movie forum and it hasn't even been 24 hours since I last checked that forum for spam. The spambots need to be shot. I guess you can't actually shoot a spambot, but I wish there was some way to destroy them.

UKjovi 07-31-2007 10:35 AM

Ask Peter to put in better protection then

Thomas Anderson 07-31-2007 11:15 AM

I've just got up and there were 5 more already :(

Thats a bummer
But why do we need a condom?

Thomas Anderson 08-16-2007 07:24 PM

This spam problem hasn't gone away. Everytime I visit the forrm there's spam to delete. Sometimes that can be a dozen times a day. Take a look at all of the ones I've deleted just today (a full mod has to delete them fully)

Kev 08-16-2007 08:01 PM

I'll sort this for you now Neil....

Kev 08-16-2007 08:02 PM

Done........

Thomas Anderson 08-16-2007 08:39 PM

It's not having them there awaiting deletion that's the problem mate - it's that there's a dozen of them a day and peter is never here so can't take measures to prevent it happening.

Solid Sambora 08-17-2007 01:28 PM

I don't know how hard it would be to implement, but wouldn't one of those random picture generators in the sign-up page cut most of it out? You know the thing I mean - 'enter the digits shown in the picture on the right'.

This has been in place for some time actually, so the spammers are still finding a way around it unfortunately...

Thomas Anderson 08-17-2007 07:01 PM

The way I solved it on my forum was to set a field that asked a question, so you can ask like "What is 2 + 5?" and as it;s int text format, the spambots can't do it, and without the correct answer it won't let you register at all.

This sounds like a excellent idea :)

Ice

No they use the same thing (don't know what it is called at moment) what is google is using from the search engine

So words like SEX, BLOWJOB, EATING CUNT, ANAL SEX, ANIMAL SEX, CUMSHOTS etc will attract porno-spam

words like MEDICINE, CANCER, ASPRINE, INJECTIONS etc will give for example medical-spam

words like BOMB, TERROR, ISLAM, OSAMA-BIN-LADEN, WAHALA etc will go directly to some instution and the page will be monitored

Keep this post, and within 2 days there will be more spamming in this forum as usual

change the title with any of the above words, and even more spam will come

that's how it works, not random

Lets test it

It is random. And it also has to do with how badly or how well the forum is protected. Programming an intelligen web-spider just for spamming would be just stupid.

All the posts are random words or sentences put together as well. The only thing that's not random about spam is that once they find a place they can spam, the bots will keep at it until they're shut out or shut down.

Ah well, been a long time since I signed up! The only other suggestion would be newbies need moderator approval to join, maybe even setting it up so that they can join but can't post for the first couple of days. It might be a lot for the mods to have to do, but it may be the best way of stopping the spammers. Then again, for all I know, thats already in place lol!

Ice

I wasn't say anything about the regristation part, that is easy to solve.
Even though, the bots are not handling random they are somehow pre-programmed.
They for example keep count how many links in the post are clicked, if not any are clicked for a while they will get less, and vice versa
The words are also not random, if the title is sex-related then there are sexlinks, if it is medicated related then there are that kinda links. The latter one is a good example, somehow they are a lot on here, meaning they are clicked a lot (in contrary to other 'subjects')
Your talking complete bullocks here

Of course they are programmed, but they still work using a random number generator. I don't know how many programs you've programmed, but I'm guessing zero.

That's bullshit. Even if no one clicks on a spam message, there will be more.

Not true either. There are many lists of words that the bot chooses from. It has no inteeligence, it just searches for the same words on the lists and the web page. The lists are man-made.

Again, you're wrong. The spam bots don't count clicks, they have no means to do that. If you click the links on the posts, then of course they can count them, but that's done by the server end of the spammers page, not the bot. Clicking or not clicking a post here has no effect.

I know Peter is a busy man so couldnt he give the control of the board to someone who has more time to spend on it?

He could do yes, and he has talked about this in the past (making one of the mods a 'supermod') but nothing came to light of it really. Maybe one day in the future ;)

Well I have brought it up again in the mod-forum, so we shall see. He isn't really around enough to take notice anyway ;)
