Songwriters Vie For 2008 Honors
The Songwriters Hall of Fame mailed ballots to their voting members this week to select the 2008 inductees.

Performer nominees include Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood, Tom Petty, John Sebastian, Yusulf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) and David Gates, according to a press release.

The songwriting teams nominated include Chicago's Robert Lamm and James Pankow; Foreigner's Mick Jones and Lou Gramm; The Doors' John Densmore, Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison; and Bon Jovi's Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.

SHOF voters must also choose inductees in the non-performer category. Nominees include Desmond Child ("Livin' La Vida Loca"), Albert Hammond ("To All The Girls I've Loved Before"), Graham Gouldman ("The Things We Do For Love"), Alan Menken ("A Whole New World"), Billy Sherrill ("Stand By Your Man"), Chip Taylor ("Wild Thing") and Mark James ("Suspicious Minds").

Non-performing songwriting teams for 2008 include Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart ("Come a Little Bit Closer"), Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway ("Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress"), Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell ("Workin' My Way Back to You"), Galt MacDermot, James Rado and Gerome Ragni ("Hair"), and Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss ("Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini").

The 39th annual induction and awards dinner is scheduled for June 19 in New York City.

Well, they certainly belong.
As does Alan Menken, and Desmond Child.

Cool. Thanks for posting Becky. So how many of the nominees actually get in?? Does anyone know? And if you don't get in this year can you be nominated again?

Either way it's nice they are being recognized as songwriters!

Oh my. I can already imagine people jumping on the band for writing (in their opinion) the masterpiece they know as We Got It Goin' On. :D

All kidding aside, it's great that they're getting recognition as songwriters. They've both written some amazing lyrics over the years.

I also see it coming, they win the award for best songwriter, going to perform and choose; We've got it going on. Sooo BJ 2007

The judges will probably have Livin on a prayer etc on their minds when deciding the votes, so Desmond Child should get respect for that, not for writing a Rickey Martin song!

I'm away to think how many of BJ's big hits where written purely by Jon or Jon/Richie, i Know theres been more and more co-writers post 2000...

Great news. I wish Sixx would be up there though.

FLAME-XIII 11-22-2007 09:37 PM

They waited for 12 years for this purpose?
