Hey God in Live From London
 

I think that Live From London's version of Hey God is brilliant, but I've just noticed that Richie starts it with a Les Paul but finishes it with a strat.

Any idea why?

I thought it looked like the Les Paul had issues at the end of his solo. He kind of threw his hand up and walked off the stage with it - with a lot of feedback. At Yokohama he played all the way through on the Les Paul.

And he starts Always with a strat and then somehow during the song he has a Les Paul.

Anyone think they're editing footage together, or is he just doing what he does in Wanted?

its just probably due to the fact that his guitar was gone out of tune or something, so he needed a fast change of the instrument.

Wow never noticed that before......yeah maybe it went out of tune or maybe he planned on changing deliberately. As for Always, Richie obviously doesn't play for ages until he comes in on the second verse. Also he has taken his jacket and glasses off so I think it was planned to swap at that point. I guess it's similar to Born to Be My Baby during the Bounce tour when he'd start the intro with guitar number 1 then change after the two notes on 'Rainy night.....' then have guitar number 2 ready for 'Our love, our life....'

Exactly. It's more than likely for transition. If you have more time to switch guitars in the break of a song, it's understandable. I dont' think it's a matter of shoddy editting. It could be anything I guess. Broken string, different guitar to fit the song, yadda yadda.

I'm going to stick with technical difficulties. In , he leaves at 4:30 then there's no guitar until 4:46 when he comes back with the strat. In , there is no real break in the guitar (3:16), he just keeps playing after the solo.

I watch both these shows when I'm running on the treadmill, so yes, I've watched them far too much. I will say though, his solo, and the stuff he does near the end, both make for great sprint sections. :p

it's definitely technical difficulties.
In case you have the Now & Forever or Live Days from Wembley bootleg (straight from the BBC broadcast of the show), you can hear the guitar sounding weak up untill the switch point mentioned above.
The VHS/DVD guitarpart is overdubbed to mask the technical difficulties. It's even visible in the intro part where Richie tabs but you hear a chord (or vice versa, haven't seen the show in ages)

There's also dubbing on the solo during Always...compare the DVD version to the BBC Radio broadcast so there was definetly dubbing done on the release...
