Bond 22 - Quantum Of Solace

That is the official title as announced today, taken from an old Flemming short story apparently. Sounds a bit weird, but perhaps once we see a trailer and get a synopsis it might make sense.

I agree - definitely the oddest Bond film title yet - sounds more like an Indiana Jones movie, or a Lara Croft one...lol

Thomas Anderson 01-24-2008 07:05 PM

I'm warming to it - they are taking a very new direction with the films now, so it's only fitting perhaps that they shy away from the old style titles too. The last few were a bit crap anyway - The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day etc

I was a big Pierce Brosnan fan and thought he was pretty good as Bond though the films did get cheesier and cheesier..

I really thought Daniel Craig was going to bomb and he'd be another Timothy Dalton or something - but then obviously watched Casino Royale and was totally converted, so looking forward to the new one.

Though did watch CR on Sky+ the other day and it took me several days to get through the thing - I kept falling asleep!!!!!

Thomas Anderson 01-24-2008 08:12 PM

I liked Brosnan too, but I like the new direction they are taking now. We had 40 years with 20 of the cheesy Bond films, now we have really gritty action films which don't have quite so outlandish villains or plots.

The Beeb story.

I love the title, sounds very mysterious.

Peterson 01-24-2008 09:07 PM

Cool, at least it's got a title now! Still a while to wait for it's release though!

I really liked Brosnan, but felt his only good film was Goldeneye, downhill after that.

Really liked Daniel Craig in the last film, hope he's as good, if not better in this one.

Goldsausage 01-24-2008 10:49 PM

Daniel Craig was great as Bond but god dammit am I the only one who thinks that Casino Royale was a hell load of shit?

Maybe not, but it was waayyyyyy much better than Die Another Day. Makes me wonder how do you rate that one?

JerseyboyUK 01-31-2008 02:45 PM

I liked Casino Royale and though Daniel Craig did a great job in bringing the role up to date. But for me there was one thing missing that a Bond movie should have...

Where were all the GADGETS!?
Apart from the pathetic blatent product-placement of Sony (mobile phone, laptop) there wasn't any :-S

Wasn't Casino Royale meant to be a 'back to basics' film?, no fancy gadgets, just loads of action etc.

Rosscoe 02-09-2008 12:23 AM

Blatant product placement....try the Poker competition in CR.

"Is the watch Rolex?"
"Omega."

Really enjoyed CR though. But I do enjoy some of the cheesie-ness in the Bond movies. Having said that, I never saw the last Pierce Brosnan Bond movie.

Quantum of Solace if a name of Ian Fleming book of Bond short stories. It's one of the few they didn't use in Bond films so far. And I agree, even if it is different, it's better than the ones used since the original Fleming-names ran out.

Trailer looks great. Canīt wait to see the film.

sssandy 09-25-2008 01:37 PM

I didn't like Casino Royale that much. Trailers of Quantum of Solace looks good though. .

Thomas Anderson 09-25-2008 01:42 PM

The song is atrocious though - Alicia Keys and Jack White from The White Stripes.

If they'd just used Alicia Keys alone then it could perhaps have been more piano and her voice isn't bad - but this way is utterly dreadful!

Simon 10-10-2008 02:03 AM

So we get another movie where Bond is more or less on his own seeking for personal revenge? Well... But in that case the title fits perfectly - never had problems with it. A bit undecided about the title song, couldn't have been better if they'd done a bit more with the chorus. But the piano is just great! After I've seen the latest trailer I start looking forward to the movie, first I was so sceptic, and still I think it will be different from what I would love. You know, I love James Bond movies, but I don't like action movies. These are the only action movies I enjoy, and still I think there should be less action and more story. I get that back-to-basics thing, though. It's a restart of the saga, and unless they don't bring Goldfinger back in the next movie, it works great. But please, bring more gadgets and cheesyness. But I absolut understand that Bond first has to go through all this shit... and no matter what, Daniel Graig made a real good 007, and in general I like the new turn the movies are taking. Did that make sense? ;-)

Just heard this song, really is dreadful.

Quite possibly the worst Bond theme i've heard!

No! We've had 40 years of that type of Bond film and it's out-dated now, there's nowhere else to go with it. You say you want to see less action and more story - how relevant are gadgets? If he gets a car that launches rockets and whatever, then you know that something is coming which will just so happen to put him in a situation where he'll need those specific gadgets - makes the films too predictable. At least with this re-invention we see a more real person, and not the cheesy, chauvenist we've seen for years in the series already. We're seeing what drives him, what makes him who he is. I loved Casino Royale and I look forward to this one and any more that they may make in the future.

I think the song sounds alright actually, I like it has long instrumental interludes and duels, and that the chorus melody is a bit quirky. The main problem with it is that the vocal production is horrible, and the vocals just get buried in all the other layers

I don't want the same old movies again, I'm quite pleased with the new style. But I just love the humor of the old movies, and funny gadgets (like shooting pens and stuff) just make me smile. Stuff like that, no weapons for mass destruction in the car or such. I understand that the Craig Bond is serious - but he could need a little more humour, Bond-style of course.

Ah, whatever, I wanna see QOS - NOW!!!

Simon 11-06-2008 07:17 PM

Have you seen it people? I've seen it last week here in Sweden, where its premiere was two weeks ahead of the US. But as much as I've been looking forward to the sequel of the brilliant "Casino Royale", I left the cinema with huge disappointment. I'm about to say it's among the worst bonds ever, only "Die Another Day" is worse (I tried and I tried but I really can't stand that one, though Brosnan is a great Bond). The action scenes were crap (no shot was longer than 1 second) and the story nearly not existing, plus he acted weirdly in some scenes (like saving the "bond" girl, only to hand her over to some random guy on the pier and then leave) or the thing with Matthis. Not going to spoil here. Not much of an explanation overall. No real atmosphere, no good flow, and pointless things all along the way. Looks unfinished, somehow rushed and given to the hands of a director who has never made an action movie before.

I have to admit that I might have lost a bit because watching it in english, but watching it in my native tongue it might only increase its quality about 10%. Yeah, it's that bad. Very strange, nothing compared to "Casino Royale". They should have taken the same director at least, and the script... it's just weird. Unworthy for a bond movie. My friend who was with me, also a huge Bond fan, called it the "worst movie ever". Which is of course a bit exaggerating, but expectations were high of course, as it wasn't a random action movie.
I'm going to watch it again though and I'm curious about your thoughts. On ImDb it got a 7,6 rating so far, which is surprisingly good.

Peterson 11-06-2008 09:43 PM

I have to agree there.

I was really looking forward to seeing this after enjoying Casino Royale so much. Went to see it on it's opening night and left the cinema feeling very disappointed.

The story just seemed non-existant!

JerseyMan 11-07-2008 12:24 AM

i too enjoyed casino, lookin forward for this one
