Richie's outro solo in "The Distance"

Is great. I heard it was originally on the studio track for the album but was cut. Why?! Its the best part of the song! Did the idea of solos on Bounce (RSOW aside) make the record company come out in a rash?

Its one of the few recent BJ songs which I actually prefer the live version.

If it was originally in the song, this would be the first I've heard. Where did you hear that? Not that I don't believe it, I just have never heard anyone claim that.

lol, and they even say that Bounce is a guitar driven album, yet it doesnt contain a memorable piece of guitar work!!

I prefer the Shepherd's Bush version personally.

That one from Japan looks like Tico either cut Richie short during the outro or Richie was ready to go over the number of bars they'd pre-planned for jamming - seemed a bit messy.

I'd not heard the rumour that it was originally meant to be on the album either. Shame it wasn't. :(

Bullshit. LH may suck as a record, but there's lot of fills and guitar interplay on that record.

I think Tico played the ending fill at the right time, as a drummer myself I know when its right to cut a noodling guitarist short.

Of course the guitarist will think he's blowing everyones mind but 9/10 he's not. :p

I don't rate the distance as a live track.

But those are two completely opposing points. I think Bounce was guitar driven, and that was the problem with the album. All the rock songs had this...plodding, chunky guitar sound that didn't lift the songs to where they needed to be, in my opinion. The songs just weren't any fun I think.

That's not the way Jovi have ever done it though. In all cases I've seen where there has been a jammed outro solo, it's Richie who gives the nod for the final few phrases. It has to be Richie really, otherwise it sounds disjointed and messy, as that clip above did. If it's free-time with no prior agreement over bar numbers, the guitarist has to make the call IMO - but I would say that as I'm a guitarist! :D

To be honest, that is the infamous Zepp Show promo of 2002 though and I reckon half of the band were either severely jet-lagged or pished given the rest of the performance.

that tone on the solo was amazing.

shame the rythmn sound was so muddy and rectifiery on that album
