Has Jon's voice improved since 2000?
hey!
i was reading a review on the Sydney show that said Jon'a voice is much better, so what does it compare to? imo, his voice was best from 92-94 with Dry County, Always, etc, but then on DA and Crush it seemed weak. Bounce shows his voice being stronger, but just how much better than the Crush Tour DVD is it these days? I hope it doesn't pack in b4 the Glasgow show next year! |
i have a very similliar question, but you were faster :)
I think his voice was best in the 80ies and 90ies. Maybe I'm wrong but for me it seems to be that he changed his way of singing to a ,IMO, worse way: I think he sings in a more nasal way and squeezes the voclas more then in the past("The Distance": ther#s a traaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiin out in the distance; Destinaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaation still unknown). Did somebody else recognize that? I think Jons voice had it's best days already;but its still good enough. |

Aloha !
No, not again a discussion about Jon's Voice, here we go again. Let's all make it clear in one time : -Jon can't reach the high notes in Prayer anymore. -Richie's voice is stronger and Richie cán reach the high notes. -Jon's voice has had it's best time. -He has changed his way of singing, but he does that every 2 albums. -That's it. I think it's obvious his voice has changed, quite dramatically. I was surprised to hear Jon say in an interview recently that he thought it had changed for the better. But, to each his own I guess.
In regards to Crush period vs. today, it's better than it was. Listen to Storytellers or the Crush Tour DVD and you can tell he's really struggling to get the vocals out. Describing it as "pushing" is pretty accurate. His intonations sound really pinched, very nasal. Like he's not opening his mouth and is instead singing straight out his nose. Just a personal taste, but I find it very grating to listen to. However, judging by what I've seen from the various TV spots the last few months(and Bounce as an album)... some of the smoothness and fullness to his voice is coming back. If you compare It's My Life on VH1 Big 2002 vs. My Vh1 Awards 2000, there is a pretty perceptible difference, and in Jon's favor. He doesn't seem to be forcing it as much. I really hope this pattern continues, because Jon's voice at it's best(around These Days era for me) is something amazing. I have memories of literally being memorized by the vocals during live performances... that just hasn't happened lately. But, I definetly think whatever funk he was going through around Crush has been ironed out, somewhat. In fairness, I do like some of the rough texture he's developed on songs like "Open All Night" and the Ally songs he did. There's an understated longing in *that* voice. It's just when he lapses into trying to push all of the vowels out of his nose that I think things have gone seriously wrong. Perspective is important though. He's blown out his voice before and if he has to cheat somewhat to get through a tour or whatever, I completely understand that. Back to the point-- yeah, he is sounding better than he was sounding during the Crush tour. I'll know more after watching the concert they are showing on USA tonight... |
I love Jon's voice, no matter what......I just go with the flow

Jon's voice sounds great. I find it hard to believe people think he sounded better in the 80's. He sounded like he was in pain on the SWW tour... oh, yeah, he WAS in pain on the SWW tour. He has much better control of his voice now and he sounds stronger and better than ever. I admit I was surprised his voice improved because he started smoking, but it has.

LOL, Becky, you made my night...  Good Job there!! From what I have heard, his voice does sound like he is in pain. His voice now is deep and full. As of the SWW tour, it was kinda high pitched and really wasn't getting the low notes that he could achieve now...

I still believe Jon can hit all the notes. He hits high notes all the time. But who would want to hit the high notes all the time? Especially on Prayer. Jesus...the notes are high, yes, but they're also 'screaming'.. Richie does that part and doesn't scream on it. This is wise. That's what hurt Jon in the past. But I've heard him hit high notes live many times that we're not screaming.. Haven't you heard Say It Isn't So.. Even on the Crush Tour DVD (not the BEST performance, but good)..he hit them swell. Everyone suddenly thinks that because Jon chooses not to hit the notes all the time and lets his main backup singer do it..well..they think he can't hit them. Although, I don't think anyone can fully back this up at all. He's also stopped singing high sometimes because it was suggested so..not because he can't. Have you heard the screams on Love Me Back To Life..and All About Lovin' You. I hope he doesn't scream live. It bothers my vocals too.. as it does most people..screaming is never a good thing.
And the main Livin' On A Prayer part (not the highest part) is no problem for Jon. That's obvious. I think he just lets the crowd handle it, and Richie because..it's just cooler. Kind of like in "You Give Love A Bad Name"... crowd participation there. So why am I typing all this? Because I agree with Jon. He's also stated, along with many others, that he can still hit the notes. Also, I disagree with those who say he can't hit the notes..because..it's just....obvious. So, that's it. I agree with Jon. Even without hearing it from him, I knew he could hit them. I'm sure anyone who listens to the songs can tell. Hitting the screaming notes? Stupid. Hitting the high notes? Can be stupid at times. Saving voice? Smart! Anyway, I want to go to a new topic. I've been dying to tell someone.. I absolutely love "Rosie" on Richie's Stranger In This Town album. Awesome. Anyway agree? |
